Your First Spanish Café Order

Ordering one drink in a Spanish café

In a café, you only need a small amount of Spanish to place a basic order. This lesson focuses on choosing one drink, saying what you want, confirming the choice, and thanking the person serving you.

You already know — I want… and — Please. You can now use them with a few common drinks.

  • — I want a coffee, please.
  • — I want a tea, please.
  • — I want water, please.
  • — I want a juice, please.

Useful drink words for a first café order

Keep the vocabulary small and practical. The goal is not to learn a complete café menu yet, but to recognize and order one familiar drink.

  • — a coffee
  • — a tea
  • — water
  • — a juice

Use the drink word inside a complete request rather than trying to build longer sentences.

  • — I want a coffee.
  • — I want a tea.
  • — I want water.

Recognizing a simple question about your order

A café worker may ask what you want with a short question such as — What do you want?

At this level, treat — What do you want? as a complete café question. You do not need to analyze the verb form yet.

Person A: — What do you want?

Person B: — I want a coffee, please.

The important skill is recognizing that the question asks you to choose something and responding with one clear item.

Confirming the drink you chose

After you order, the café worker may repeat the drink to check that they heard correctly. You can confirm with — Yes.

Person A: — I want a tea, please.

Person B: — A tea?

Person A: — Yes.

If the repeated drink is not what you wanted, repeat your correct choice clearly.

Person A: — I want water, please.

Person B: — A coffee?

Person A: — No. Water, please.

This kind of short confirmation is useful because it prevents a simple misunderstanding before the order is completed.

Ending the café exchange politely

After your order is understood, use — Thank you. The worker may reply — You’re welcome.

Person A: — I want a juice, please.

Person B: — A juice?

Person A: — Yes. Thank you.

Person B: — You’re welcome.

A complete first café exchange

This short conversation contains everything you need for your first café order: greeting, the order question, one drink, confirmation, and thanks.

Person A: — Hello.

Person B: — Hello.

Person A: — What do you want?

Person B: — I want a coffee, please.

Person A: — A coffee?

Person B: — Yes. Thank you.

Person A: — You’re welcome.

You do not need to discuss prices yet, and you do not need to order a full meal. Those skills come later. For now, focus on making one drink choice clear and confirming that the other person understood it.

From ordering a drink to understanding small prices

You can now place a simple café drink order, recognize a basic question about your choice, confirm what you want, and end the exchange politely. The next lesson adds Spanish numbers from zero to twenty so you can begin understanding small prices and quantities.
