C2 Register Workshop: Preserve Meaning While Changing Voice, Audience, and Medium

This workshop asks you to transform one message across voice, audience, and medium while tracking exactly what changes. You will compare implication, directness, rhythm, and information density in each version, while keeping facts, limits, and unresolved conditions stable.

Core message

— The project can launch on October 15 if the security review finishes before the 10th and no critical defects appear.

La revisión está en curso. — The review is underway.

— The October 15 date is not yet guaranteed.

Version 1: internal team chat

— We are still aiming for October 15, but it depends on closing security review before the 10th and on no critical defect appearing.

Version 2: executive briefing

— October 15 remains the target date. We will be able to maintain it if the security review concludes before the 10th and identifies no critical defects. Therefore, the date must still be considered conditional.

Version 3: customer update

— Our target is to launch the service on October 15. The date depends on successfully completing the security review planned for the coming days. We will confirm the final schedule as soon as that review finishes.

Version 4: formal risk note

— The October 15 launch date is subject to two conditions: completion of the security review before the 10th and absence of critical defects. Until both conditions are met, the date must not be communicated as a definitive commitment.

Version 5: spoken all-hands update

— The target remains October 15. We are close, but there is one important condition: security has to close the review before the 10th without detecting any critical defect. Until then, we are talking about a target date, not a guarantee.

Track what stays fixed

15 de octubre = objetivo — October 15 = target.

revisión antes del día 10 — review before the 10th.

ningún defecto crítico — no critical defect.

fecha no garantizada todavía — date not yet guaranteed.

Track directness

Seguimos apuntando... — We are still aiming...

está sujeta a dos condiciones — is subject to two conditions.

Track rhythm

El objetivo sigue siendo el 15 de octubre. Estamos cerca, pero hay una condición importante... — The target remains October 15. We are close, but there is one important condition...

Track implication

— We will confirm the final schedule as soon as that review finishes.

Do not change the constraint

Bad:

El servicio se lanzará el 15 de octubre. — The service will launch on October 15.

Change voice deliberately

Seguimos apuntando al 15. — We are still aiming for the 15th.

La fecha de lanzamiento permanece condicionada. — The launch date remains conditional.

Workshop task

For each new version, record:

qué eliminaste — what you removed.

qué hiciste más explícito — what you made more explicit.

qué cambió en el tono — what changed in tone.

qué hechos y límites permanecieron intactos — what facts and limits remained intact.

Workshop quality criteria

  1. Every version fits its medium and audience.
  2. The factual core stays stable.
  3. Target does not become guarantee.
  4. Conditions remain visible whenever they affect the conclusion.
  5. Shared-context language is removed when the audience does not share it.
  6. Rhythm and sentence length fit spoken or written delivery.
  7. You can explain why each stylistic trade-off was made.

From Register Control to Negotiation Tension

You can now change medium and voice while keeping the semantic boundaries of one message intact. The next lesson teaches Tracking Underlying Interests and Unspoken Tensions in Spanish Negotiations.
