Spanish Rhetoric Workshop: Analyze, Compose, Perform, and Revise a Persuasive Text

This workshop integrates rhetorical analysis, composition, performance, and revision. You will analyze a model, compose a persuasive text, perform it, gather evidence about how the audience actually understood it, and revise the wording or delivery for a stated reason. The goal is improvement in argument, voice, and performance without sacrificing fairness or factual precision.

Workshop issue

Should a public library extend weekend hours?

Model text

— We are not asking whether a library open longer “sounds good.” We are asking what need it solves, for whom, and at what cost. Entry records show that on Saturday afternoons occupancy frequently exceeds 80%, while a local survey indicates that many students and workers cannot attend during the week. Extending hours can improve access, but it will only be sustainable if we measure additional use and staffing cost.

Analyze the model

Frame:

qué necesidad resuelve, para quién y a qué coste — what need it solves, for whom, and at what cost.

This frames the issue as evaluable public service design rather than symbolic support for libraries.

Rhetorical structure

Antithesis:

No preguntamos si... Preguntamos... — We are not asking whether... We are asking...

Parallelism:

qué necesidad, para quién, a qué coste — what need, for whom, at what cost.

Qualification:

solo será sostenible si medimos... — it will only be sustainable if we measure...

Compose your thesis

Example thesis:

— The library should extend Saturday hours for a four-month pilot period, with monitoring of use and cost.

This is narrower than permanent expansion and includes an evaluation mechanism.

Compose the strongest opposing argument

Opponent:

— If the extension requires reducing staff at other times or increases cost too much, the access benefit may come with a deterioration in service.

Respond fairly

Response:

— That risk must be measured during the pilot. If extending Saturday significantly worsens other time slots, the proposal would have to be revised or abandoned.

Compose a short speech

Draft:

— The data show a real need for access on Saturday. We do not yet know whether the extension will be cost-effective in the long term, and precisely for that reason I am not proposing a permanent decision. I propose four months of testing, a clear record of usage, and a transparent cost comparison. If it works, we will have evidence to continue. If it does not work, we will have evidence to correct.

Perform the text

Delivery plan:

Pause after:

no propongo una decisión permanente — I am not proposing a permanent decision.

Stress:

cuatro meses de prueba — four months of testing.

Slow down for:

un registro claro del uso y una comparación transparente del coste — a clear record of usage and a transparent cost comparison.

Collect audience evidence

Ask listeners:

¿Qué decisión concreta estoy proponiendo? — What concrete decision am I proposing?

¿Cuál es la principal condición para continuar? — What is the main condition for continuing?

¿Qué objeción reconocí como válida? — Which objection did I recognize as valid?

Use misunderstanding as revision evidence

Suppose several listeners answer:

Quieres ampliar el horario de forma permanente. — You want to extend the hours permanently.

Then the speech failed to communicate the provisional nature clearly enough.

Revision based on evidence

Revised opening:

— My proposal is not a permanent extension. It is a four-month test to find out whether extending Saturday improves access without worsening the rest of the service.

The revision directly addresses the audience's misunderstanding.

Performance revision

If listeners report that the conclusion felt rushed, change delivery rather than content:

Pause before:

Si funciona... — If it works...

Then say:

Si funciona, tendremos evidencia para continuar. Si no funciona, tendremos evidencia para corregir. — If it works, we will have evidence to continue. If it does not work, we will have evidence to correct.

Do not revise only for applause

If one listener dislikes the policy but understands the argument accurately, disagreement alone is not evidence that the text failed.

Revision should respond to:

  • misunderstanding
  • unintended ambiguity
  • missing counterargument
  • weak evidence connection
  • poor pacing or emphasis

Workshop record

Record:

cambio realizado — change made.

evidencia que motivó el cambio — evidence that motivated the change.

efecto esperado — expected effect.

Example:

— Change: clarify that the pilot lasts four months. Evidence: three listeners interpreted the proposal as permanent. Expected effect: reduce misunderstanding about the degree of commitment.

Workshop quality criteria

  1. The analysis identifies rhetorical choices and their argumentative role.
  2. The composition has a thesis, evidence, and a strong counterargument.
  3. The performance uses pacing and emphasis deliberately.
  4. Audience feedback is treated as evidence about comprehension, not as a popularity contest.
  5. Every revision has a stated reason.
  6. Argument strength may improve, but facts and limitations remain accurate.
  7. The final version is fairer, clearer, or more effective for a demonstrable reason.

From Rhetoric to Register Shifts

You can now revise both persuasive text and delivery according to evidence about how an audience actually interpreted them. The next lesson teaches Shifting Spanish Register Mid-Conversation as Roles and Relationships Change.
