Speaking Task: Move from Informal Discussion to Formal Briefing Without Preparation in Spanish
Speaking Task: Move from Informal Discussion to Formal Briefing Without Preparation in Spanish
In this speaking task, you will transform an informal discussion into a formal briefing immediately, without a prepared script. You must reorganize the ideas, clarify references, remove dependence on private context, and present a complete message to listeners who were not part of the earlier conversation.
Informal discussion
Person A: Lo de ayer salió bastante bien, ¿no? — Yesterday's thing went pretty well, right?
— Yes, except for the Marta issue and the last-minute server problem.
— Well, that got fixed in the end.
— Yes, but it left us exposed for almost twenty minutes.
— And the other thing will have to be settled today.
Problem: shared context
The informal exchange contains:
lo de ayer — yesterday's thing.
lo de Marta — the Marta issue.
eso — that.
lo otro — the other thing.
Your formal briefing task
Imagine that a director asks:
— Can you summarize what happened in yesterday's test?
Immediate briefing
— Yesterday's load test was completed with generally satisfactory results. We had a server interruption of approximately twenty minutes, which was resolved during the session. In addition, Marta's availability for the second phase remains to be confirmed, and that point must be settled today.
What changed
Remove colloquial evaluation
nos dejó vendidos — left us exposed / in a difficult position.
provocó una interrupción operativa de aproximadamente veinte minutos — caused an operational interruption of approximately twenty minutes.
Do not overformalize
Better opening:
— I will summarize the main results of yesterday's test.
Complete missing context
— The server interruption was resolved during the test.
Maintain uncertainty
La disponibilidad de Marta todavía debe confirmarse. — Marta's availability still needs to be confirmed.
Second spontaneous shift
— The client is still avoiding settling the date.
Person B: Ya, y sin fecha no podemos reservar nada. — Yeah, and without a date we cannot book anything.
Formal briefing:
— The client has not yet confirmed a definitive date. While that date remains open, we cannot make the logistical bookings.
Performance frame
Situación general... — Overall situation...
Incidencia principal... — Main incident...
Punto pendiente... — Outstanding issue...
Siguiente paso... — Next step...
Self-correction
— Yesterday's thing... sorry, yesterday's load test went well overall.
A practical impromptu-briefing method
- Name the event explicitly.
- State the overall result first.
- Replace private references with full noun phrases.
- Replace colloquial idioms with clear professional descriptions.
- Reorder information into result, incident, unresolved point, next action.
- Preserve uncertainty and unresolved status.
- Use quick self-repair when informal wording slips into the briefing.
