Speaking Task: Explain a Sensitive Spanish Message Across Cultural Expectations
In this speaking task, you will explain a sensitive Spanish message to an audience whose expectations about directness, politeness, or relationship may differ from those of the original interaction. Your task is to preserve the original speaker's intention, content, and limits while supplying only the context needed to avoid a misleading interpretation.
Original message
Manager:
Necesito que a partir de ahora los cambios de alcance se documenten antes de ejecutarse. — I need scope changes to be documented before they are implemented from now on.
The sentence is direct and establishes a procedural requirement.
Potential misunderstanding
A listener from another workplace culture may hear the direct form as personal anger.
Your explanation should not say:
Está enfadado contigo. — He is angry with you.
unless the interaction provides evidence for that emotion.
Faithful explanation
El mensaje es firme porque establece un procedimiento obligatorio, pero la frase no contiene por sí sola una acusación personal. — The message is firm because it establishes a mandatory procedure, but the sentence by itself does not contain a personal accusation.
Add necessary context
Suppose earlier changes were made without written approval.
Context:
La petición aparece después de varios cambios que se ejecutaron antes de quedar documentados. — The request comes after several changes were implemented before being documented.
This explains why the procedural point is salient without assigning a hidden motive.
Second message: indirect refusal
Speaker:
Esta semana me resulta muy difícil asumir otra revisión. — It is very difficult for me to take on another review this week.
Depending on context, this may function as a refusal of the current timing rather than permanent refusal of the task.
Faithful explanation:
La persona está señalando un límite de disponibilidad esta semana; no necesariamente rechaza la tarea en cualquier fecha. — The person is indicating a limit on availability this week; they are not necessarily rejecting the task at any time.
Check intention through follow-up
If the speaker later says:
El lunes sí podría hacerlo. — I could do it on Monday.
then the timing interpretation is confirmed.
Do not turn one speaker into a culture
Bad explanation:
En español la gente siempre rechaza las cosas de forma indirecta. — In Spanish people always refuse things indirectly.
This is an unsupported cultural generalization.
Better:
En esta interacción concreta, la persona formula el límite de manera indirecta y después ofrece una fecha alternativa. — In this specific interaction, the person states the limit indirectly and then offers an alternative date.
Third message: formal distance
Speaker:
Le agradecería que cualquier nueva solicitud se enviara por el canal oficial. — I would appreciate any new request being sent through the official channel.
The sentence is formally polite but may carry a strong procedural expectation.
Explain:
La cortesía gramatical suaviza la forma, pero el contenido establece que las futuras solicitudes deben pasar por el canal oficial. — Grammatical politeness softens the form, but the content establishes that future requests must go through the official channel.
Preserve the original speaker's stance
Do not transform:
Le agradecería que... — I would appreciate it if...
into:
Quizá sería buena idea... — Perhaps it would be a good idea...
The second sounds more optional.
Fourth message: criticism with relationship protection
Speaker:
Valoro el trabajo que habéis hecho, pero no puedo apoyar esta versión del informe porque mezcla resultados confirmados con estimaciones todavía provisionales. — I value the work you have done, but I cannot support this version of the report because it mixes confirmed results with estimates that are still provisional.
Faithful explanation:
La persona reconoce el trabajo del equipo, pero rechaza esta versión concreta por una razón metodológica. — The speaker recognizes the team's work but rejects this specific version for a methodological reason.
Do not summarize it as:
No le gusta vuestro trabajo. — He / she does not like your work.
Performance criteria
Use a three-part mediation frame:
Lo que dice literalmente es... — What it literally says is...
En este contexto, la función principal parece ser... — In this context, the main function appears to be...
No podemos concluir solo por la forma que... — We cannot conclude from the form alone that...
Example
Lo que dice literalmente es que los cambios deben documentarse antes de ejecutarse. En este contexto, la función principal parece ser establecer una regla de procedimiento. No podemos concluir solo por la forma que el hablante esté enfadado personalmente con alguien. — What it literally says is that changes must be documented before they are implemented. In this context, the main function appears to be establishing a procedural rule. We cannot conclude from the form alone that the speaker is personally angry with someone.
A practical sensitive-message method
- State the literal content accurately.
- Identify the likely interactional function from context.
- Explain politeness or directness without universal cultural claims.
- Preserve obligation, refusal, reservation, or uncertainty at the same strength.
- Add only the cultural or institutional context needed for interpretation.
- Do not add your own approval or criticism to the original speaker's position.
- State what cannot be inferred confidently.
From Sensitive Explanation to Shared Record
You can now explain a sensitive message without turning style into stereotype or changing the original speaker's stance. The next lesson is C2 Mediation Project: Turn a Contentious Spanish Discussion into a Clear Shared Record.
