Expressing Reservations and Weighing Competing Priorities in Spanish

Expressing Reservations and Weighing Competing Priorities in Spanish

In this lesson, you will express a reservation about part of a proposal without necessarily rejecting the whole proposal. You will identify competing priorities, acknowledge the cost of a choice, and state the limit or condition that would make an option acceptable.

Express a reservation

  • — The idea seems interesting to me, but I am concerned about the cost.
  • — I agree in general, although I have a concern about the deadline.
  • — I see the advantage, but I am not convinced that it is practical for everyone. Said by a male speaker.

A reservation is not always rejection

Reservation:

— I like the proposal, but I would need to know how much it would cost.

Rejection:

— I do not support this proposal.

The first keeps the option open. The second states opposition.

State competing priorities

Priority A:

— We want to reduce the cost.

Priority B:

— We also need to maintain a good level of service.

Combined:

— The challenge is to reduce the cost without worsening the service too much.

Acknowledge the cost of your preferred option

— I prefer to hire one more person for the afternoon shift, although that would increase the budget.

A balanced argument admits the disadvantage instead of hiding it.

State a limit

  • — I would accept the proposal provided that the cost did not exceed 5,000 euros.
  • — It would seem reasonable to me if it did not reduce weekend service.

These forms express a condition or limit for acceptance.

State a priority directly

  • — For me, the main priority is safety.
  • — The most important thing is that the service remain accessible.
  • — Price matters, but it is not the only criterion.

Compare two imperfect options

Option A:

— If we chose option A, we would save money, but it would take longer.

Option B:

— If we chose option B, we would finish earlier, but the cost would be higher.

Use a fixed criterion

Criterion:

— We need to finish before September 1.

Evaluation:

— With that criterion, option B seems safer, even though it is more expensive.

Ask what would change the decision

  • — What information are we missing in order to decide?
  • — What would have to change for you to accept option A?
  • — What is the budget limit?

Short discussion

Person A: — I would choose the cheaper option.

Person B: — I understand, but I have one reservation: it would take us two weeks longer.

Person A: — That's true.

Person B: — If the deadline were flexible, I would accept saving money. If it were not, I would prefer to pay more and finish on time.

A practical priority-weighing method

  1. State what you support in the option.
  2. Name the specific reservation or concern.
  3. Identify the competing priorities.
  4. Acknowledge the cost of your preferred choice.
  5. State any limit that would make an option acceptable or unacceptable.
  6. Use the same decision criterion when comparing alternatives.
  7. Distinguish reservation from full rejection.

From Reservations to Como Si

You can now express a concern without rejecting an entire proposal and weigh competing priorities explicitly. The next lesson teaches como si for describing an appearance or behavior through an unreal comparison.
