Speaking Task: Explain an Unfamiliar Concept Through Examples and Comparisons in Spanish

In this speaking task, you will explain a concept that your listener does not know. Start with its general category and function, then give one concrete example and one limited comparison with something familiar. Make the boundary of the comparison explicit so that the analogy does not replace the real concept.

Concept for the task

Un algoritmo de recomendación. — A recommendation algorithm.

Start with the category

Un algoritmo de recomendación es un sistema que utiliza información sobre usuarios, contenidos o comportamientos para ordenar o sugerir opciones. — A recommendation algorithm is a system that uses information about users, content, or behavior to rank or suggest options.

This gives the listener a general category and a function.

Avoid a circular definition

Weak:

Un algoritmo de recomendación es un algoritmo que recomienda. — A recommendation algorithm is an algorithm that recommends.

This repeats the unknown term without adding useful meaning.

Give a concrete example

Por ejemplo, una plataforma de vídeo puede observar qué tipos de vídeos has visto y utilizar esa información para ordenar lo que aparece después. — For example, a video platform can observe what types of videos you have watched and use that information to order what appears next.

Connect with something familiar

Se parece un poco a cuando una persona de una biblioteca te recomienda un libro porque conoce algunos de tus gustos. — It is a little like when a person in a library recommends a book because they know some of your tastes.

State the limit of the comparison

La comparación tiene un límite: una persona puede preguntarte por qué te gustó un libro y entender una explicación compleja; un algoritmo trabaja con los datos y señales que tiene disponibles. — The comparison has a limit: a person can ask why you liked a book and understand a complex explanation; an algorithm works with the data and signals available to it.

Explain what goes in and what comes out

Entrada:

datos sobre contenido, historial o interacciones — data about content, history, or interactions.

Salida:

una lista ordenada o una sugerencia — an ordered list or a suggestion.

Explain without unnecessary technical detail

For a general listener, you do not need to begin with mathematical formulas.

Useful:

El sistema busca patrones en los datos y los utiliza para decidir qué opciones mostrar primero. — The system looks for patterns in the data and uses them to decide which options to show first.

Respond to a request for simplification

Listener:

¿Puedes explicarlo de una forma más sencilla? — Can you explain it in a simpler way?

Speaker:

Sí. Es una herramienta que intenta adivinar qué te puede interesar a partir de información anterior. — Yes. It is a tool that tries to guess what may interest you based on previous information.

Respond to a request for precision

Listener:

Entonces, ¿el sistema sabe realmente lo que me gusta? — So, does the system really know what I like?

Speaker:

No necesariamente. Puede detectar patrones útiles, pero sus datos pueden ser incompletos y una acción no siempre refleja una preferencia estable. — Not necessarily. It can detect useful patterns, but its data may be incomplete and one action does not always reflect a stable preference.

Compare two examples

Example 1:

Una tienda puede recomendar productos parecidos a los que compraste antes. — A store can recommend products similar to those you bought before.

Example 2:

Una aplicación de música puede ordenar canciones según lo que escuchas o saltas. — A music app can rank songs according to what you listen to or skip.

The underlying concept is the same even though the data and output differ.

Speaking mission

  1. Name the general category of the concept.
  2. Explain its function without using the target term in a circular definition.
  3. Give one concrete example.
  4. Compare it with one familiar process.
  5. State one important limit of that comparison.
  6. Respond to one request to simplify.
  7. Respond to one request for greater precision.

Performance criteria

  1. The listener can identify what kind of thing the concept is.
  2. The explanation gives a function, not only a label.
  3. The example is concrete.
  4. The comparison helps without replacing the concept.
  5. The boundary of the analogy is explicit.
  6. The speaker can simplify or specify the explanation when asked.

From Explaining Concepts to Reduced Consonants

You can now explain a new concept through a category, an example, and a limited comparison. The next lesson teaches you to understand familiar Spanish when consonants are weakened and final s is aspirated or reduced in some varieties.
