Diagnosing B2 Spanish Performance Gaps from Feedback and Revised Work

In this lesson, you will diagnose a specific B2 performance gap by comparing an initial task, feedback, a revised version, and a later transfer task. You will separate problems of comprehension, language choice, organization, and interaction, rank them by impact, and decide what evidence would show that improvement has transferred to a new context.

Initial task

A learner writes:

La empresa debería cambiar el horario porque es mejor. Los empleados quieren más flexibilidad. Por eso, el horario flexible funciona. Sin embargo, todos deberían usarlo. — The company should change the schedule because it is better. Employees want more flexibility. Therefore, flexible scheduling works. However, everyone should use it.

Identify the main problem

The text has several errors, but the highest-impact problem is reasoning and organization.

Unsupported jump:

Los empleados quieren más flexibilidad. Por eso, el horario flexible funciona. — Employees want more flexibility. Therefore, flexible scheduling works.

Preference does not automatically prove effectiveness.

Feedback

Feedback:

Separa preferencia y resultado. Explica qué dato demostraría que el horario flexible funciona y limita la recomendación al grupo sobre el que tienes evidencia. — Separate preference and outcome. Explain what evidence would show that flexible scheduling works and limit the recommendation to the group for which you have evidence.

Revised work

Revised version:

Una encuesta interna muestra que muchos empleados valoran la flexibilidad, pero ese dato mide preferencia, no productividad. Antes de ampliar el horario flexible a toda la empresa, convendría comparar resultados por equipo y comprobar si la coordinación se mantiene. — An internal survey shows that many employees value flexibility, but that figure measures preference, not productivity. Before expanding flexible scheduling to the whole company, it would be advisable to compare results by team and check whether coordination is maintained.

The revision improves the original text because it separates the type of evidence from the conclusion.

Do not call one corrected text mastery

One successful revision may show that the learner understood the feedback with support.

It does not yet prove:

El problema está completamente superado. — The problem has been completely overcome.

Transfer task

New topic:

Should a university extend library hours?

Learner response:

El 70 % de los encuestados quiere un horario más amplio. Este dato demuestra que ampliar el horario reducirá las colas. — 70% of respondents want longer opening hours. This figure proves that extending the schedule will reduce lines.

The old problem has reappeared in a new context: preference is again treated as proof of an operational outcome.

Diagnosis

Precise diagnosis:

El alumno todavía confunde datos de preferencia con evidencia de efecto y generaliza la conclusión más allá de lo que mide la fuente. — The learner still confuses preference data with evidence of effect and generalizes the conclusion beyond what the source measures.

This is more useful than saying:

Tiene problemas con el español. — The learner has problems with Spanish.

Separate four problem types

Comprehension gap.

No entendió que la encuesta medía preferencia y no productividad. — He / she did not understand that the survey measured preference and not productivity.

Language-choice gap.

Usó demostrar donde sugerir o indicar habría sido más preciso. — He / she used demonstrate where suggest or indicate would have been more precise.

Organization gap.

No separó el dato, la interpretación y la recomendación. — He / she did not separate the data, interpretation, and recommendation.

Interaction gap.

Ante una objeción, repitió la tesis sin responder al problema planteado. — When faced with an objection, he / she repeated the thesis without addressing the issue raised.

Rank by impact

If one language error does not block meaning but the learner repeatedly draws unsupported conclusions, the reasoning gap has higher communicative impact.

Priority 1:

Distinguir qué mide cada fuente antes de formular una conclusión. — Distinguish what each source measures before formulating a conclusion.

Priority 2:

Elegir verbos de evidencia que correspondan a la fuerza real del dato. — Choose evidence verbs that correspond to the actual strength of the data.

Plan a targeted practice cycle

  1. Give three short sources that measure different things.
  2. Ask the learner to state exactly what each source supports.
  3. Require one limited claim and one claim that would be too strong.
  4. Give a new topic later without reminding the learner of the rule.
  5. Check whether the same distinction transfers.

Evidence of improvement

Weak evidence:

El alumno corrigió el texto después de recibir comentarios. — The learner corrected the text after receiving feedback.

Stronger evidence:

En una tarea nueva, el alumno distinguió por sí solo entre preferencia, resultado y causa, y limitó la conclusión sin recibir una pista previa. — In a new task, the learner independently distinguished among preference, outcome, and cause, and limited the conclusion without receiving a prior prompt.

Another diagnosis example: interaction

Initial behavior:

Ante una objeción sobre el coste, el alumno responde hablando de la rapidez. — When faced with an objection about cost, the learner responds by talking about speed.

Feedback:

Responde primero al criterio que plantea la otra persona. — Respond first to the criterion raised by the other person.

Transfer evidence:

En una negociación posterior, reconoce la objeción sobre el presupuesto, explica el límite y propone una alternativa. — In a later negotiation, the learner acknowledges the budget objection, explains the limit, and proposes an alternative.

A practical performance-diagnosis method

  1. Compare the initial task with the revised version.
  2. Identify the exact behavior that changed.
  3. Classify the gap as comprehension, language choice, organization, interaction, or a combination.
  4. Rank gaps by effect on meaning and task success.
  5. Design one practice activity that targets the highest-impact gap.
  6. Test the same skill in a new topic without giving the old correction in advance.
  7. Treat transfer to the new context as stronger evidence of improvement than one corrected text.
