Expressing Regret About Past Decisions in Spanish
Expressing Regret About Past Decisions in Spanish
In this lesson, you will express regret about a past action or decision. You will state what actually happened, identify the alternative you wish had happened, and connect the regret to a reason or lesson learned. The systematic conditional-perfect result is reserved for the next lesson.
Ojalá + past perfect subjunctive
- — I wish I had studied more.
- — I wish we had left earlier.
- — I wish I had not accepted that offer so quickly.
The speaker looks back at a completed past situation and wishes the past had been different.
State the actual event separately
Actual event:
— I accepted the job without comparing the conditions carefully.
Regret:
— I wish I had compared the conditions more carefully before accepting.
The second sentence does not rewrite history. It expresses the alternative the speaker wishes had happened.
Lamentar + infinitive perfect
- — I regret having arrived late.
- — I regret not having asked earlier.
- — I regret having made the decision with so little information.
Arrepentirse de + infinitive perfect
- — I regret selling the car.
- — I regret not listening to Marta's advice.
Qué pena + infinitive perfect
— What a shame not to have had more time.
This expresses disappointment or regret without building a full conditional result.
Regret versus factual explanation
Fact:
— I arrived late because I missed the bus.
Regret:
— I wish I had left home ten minutes earlier.
The first explains what happened. The second imagines a different earlier action.
Regret versus blaming someone else
Personal regret:
— I regret not having checked the date.
Blame:
— It was Carlos's fault.
These are different communicative acts. A regret statement does not automatically assign blame.
Add a reason for the regret
— I wish I had booked earlier because in the end prices rose a lot.
The reason explains why the speaker now views the earlier choice differently.
Add a lesson learned
- — Now I know that I have to compare the conditions before signing.
- — Next time I will check the date twice.
- — I have learned that it is not a good idea to decide in a hurry.
Do not turn the imagined alternative into a guaranteed result
You can say:
— I wish I had asked for more information.
Do not automatically conclude that asking would certainly have produced a better outcome unless the facts support that conclusion.
Short reflection
— I bought the tickets without checking the schedule and afterward discovered that the train arrived too late for the meeting. I regret not having reviewed that detail. I wish I had compared other schedules before buying. Now I know that when timing is important, I have to check the arrival time and not only the departure time.
A practical regret method
- State what actually happened.
- Use + past perfect subjunctive or a familiar regret expression for the alternative.
- Keep fact and wished-for alternative separate.
- Add the reason the speaker now regrets the choice.
- State a lesson learned when appropriate.
- Do not present the wished-for alternative as a guaranteed better result.
- Do not introduce a systematic conditional-perfect result until the next lesson.
From Regret to the Conditional Perfect
You can now express regret about a past decision and identify the alternative you wish had happened. The next lesson teaches the conditional perfect for describing what would have happened in an imagined past circumstance.
