Spanish Debate Workshop: Prepare, Debate, Review Feedback, and Revise Your Position

This workshop connects four stages: preparing an argument, participating in a debate, reviewing specific feedback from the interaction, and revising the position afterward. The goal is not to repeat connector rules. The goal is to show how actual objections and evidence improve the next version of your argument.

Workshop question

— Should a company allow four days of remote work per week?

Stage 1: initial position

Initial thesis:

— The company should allow four days of remote work because it would increase flexibility and reduce commuting.

Initial evidence

— In a survey of the technology team, 18 of 25 employees said they preferred working from home four days per week.

Initial weakness

The evidence comes from one team, but the thesis applies to the whole company.

Stage 2: debate challenge

Opponent:

— That figure represents only the technology team. What do we know about sales, customer service, or training?

Speaker:

No tengo datos equivalentes de esos equipos. — I do not have equivalent data from those teams.

Second challenge

Opponent:

— In addition, preference is not the same as productivity.

Speaker:

— That's true. The survey measures preference, not work outcomes.

Third challenge

Opponent:

— Would you accept a different policy depending on the type of work?

Speaker:

— Yes. If the data show different needs, one rule for the whole company could be too rigid.

Stage 3: review feedback

Feedback 1:

— The thesis was too broad for the available evidence.

Feedback 2:

— The survey supported a preference, but the argument treated it as evidence of productivity.

Feedback 3:

— The best response in the debate was accepting that different teams may need different policies.

Connect feedback to revision

Revision reason:

— The evidence does not justify a uniform policy for the entire company.

Revision:

— The company should allow each area to test different levels of remote work and evaluate productivity, coordination, and satisfaction before setting a common policy.

Why the revised position is stronger

It now matches the scope of the evidence more closely and identifies the missing evidence that a future decision should collect.

Revise a supporting reason

Old reason:

Cuatro días de teletrabajo aumentan la productividad. — Four days of remote work increase productivity.

Problem:

The debate did not provide productivity data.

Revised reason:

— A team-level trial would make it possible to measure whether flexibility can be maintained without reducing productivity or coordination.

Do not revise merely to sound more cautious

A good revision should have a reason connected to the debate evidence or feedback.

Weak revision:

Quizá, tal vez, posiblemente sería bueno considerar alguna opción. — Perhaps, maybe, possibly it would be good to consider some option.

This becomes vague without becoming more defensible.

Keep strong claims when evidence supports them

If the survey genuinely shows 18 of 25 technology employees prefer four remote days, you may keep:

En el equipo de tecnología, 18 de 25 empleados prefieren cuatro días de teletrabajo. — In the technology team, 18 of 25 employees prefer four remote-work days.

The improvement is to limit the scope, not weaken the confirmed figure.

Workshop deliverables

  1. an initial thesis
  2. two supporting reasons
  3. the evidence for each reason
  4. two likely challenges
  5. a live debate response
  6. three specific pieces of feedback
  7. a revised thesis
  8. one revised supporting reason
  9. a short explanation of why each revision was made

Workshop quality criteria

  1. The debate responses address the actual objections raised.
  2. The review identifies specific strengths and weaknesses rather than general impressions.
  3. The revised claim matches the evidence better than the original.
  4. The learner can explain why the position changed.
  5. Confirmed evidence remains stated at its original strength.
  6. The revision is more precise, not merely more vague.

From Debate Revision to Detailed Complaints

You can now revise an argument based on the actual challenges it encountered. The next lesson teaches you to make a detailed complaint with documented facts, ongoing impact, previous attempts to solve the problem, and a specific requested remedy.
