Speaking Task: Explain a Complex Problem Without Oversimplifying Responsibility in Spanish

In this speaking task, you will explain a problem involving several actions and participants. You will distinguish direct cause, contributing circumstance, known responsibility, and resulting effects. When the evidence does not identify a responsible person, say so explicitly instead of turning every result into an intentional action.

Scenario

— A company launched an update to its platform on Monday morning. Two hours later, some customers began reporting errors when uploading files. The technical team found that one of the servers had little space available. At the same time, the volume of uploaded files was much higher than normal because several customers were closing end-of-month projects. The service did not stop working completely, but some uploads failed and others took much longer. At three, the team freed up space and redistributed some of the traffic. Performance improved during the afternoon.

Start with the confirmed timeline

— The update was launched Monday morning.
  2. Dos horas después aparecieron errores de carga. — Two hours later, upload errors appeared.
  3. Un servidor tenía poco espacio disponible. — One server had little available space.
— File volume was higher than normal.
— At three, the team freed up space and redistributed traffic.
  6. El rendimiento mejoró durante la tarde. — Performance improved during the afternoon.

Separate temporal sequence from proven cause

Weak claim:

La actualización causó todos los errores. — The update caused all the errors.

The scenario only tells us that the errors appeared after the update. It also identifies low server space and unusually high traffic.

Better:

— The errors appeared after the update, but the data also show low space on one server and an exceptionally high volume of files.

Identify direct known factors

Known factor:

Un servidor tenía poco espacio disponible. — One server had little available space.

Known contributing circumstance:

— File volume was much higher than normal.

Do not turn a contributing factor into sole responsibility

Weak:

— Customers caused the problem because they uploaded too many files.

More precise:

— File volume increased greatly and may have contributed to pressure on the system.

Distinguish action from intention

The scenario says customers uploaded more files because of end-of-month work.

It does not say they intended to overload the platform.

Explain the response

— The technical team freed up space and redistributed some of the traffic.

Result:

El rendimiento mejoró durante la tarde. — Performance improved during the afternoon.

This supports a connection between the intervention and improvement, but it does not by itself prove which earlier factor was the sole root cause.

State what remains unknown

— With the available information, we do not know whether the update introduced an additional error.

This is a valid limitation.

Clarification question

Listener:

Entonces, ¿la actualización fue la causa principal? — So, was the update the main cause?

Speaker:

No podemos afirmarlo todavía. — We cannot state that yet. We know the problems began after the update, but there was also low space and much more traffic than normal.

Another clarification question

Listener:

— Who was responsible for the server having little space?

Speaker:

— The scenario does not identify a responsible person, so we cannot attribute it to any specific person.

Speaking mission

Explain the problem in three to four minutes. Include:

  1. the chronological sequence
  2. the observed effects
  3. at least two possible contributing factors
  4. one response action
  5. the resulting improvement
  6. one point that remains unknown
  7. one explicit correction of an oversimplified blame claim
  8. one answer to a clarification question

Performance criteria

  1. Events are ordered clearly.
  2. Cause is not inferred merely from temporal sequence.
  3. Known actors remain attached to their actual actions.
  4. Contributing circumstances are not converted into intentional misconduct.
  5. Unknown responsibility is stated as unknown.
  6. Results are separated from assumptions about motive.
  7. The speaker answers clarification without oversimplifying the problem.

From Complex Responsibility to Argument Structure

You can now explain a multi-factor problem without erasing uncertainty or assigning unsupported blame. The next lesson teaches vocabulary for claims, evidence, objections, assumptions, and conclusions.
