Spanish Cleft and Pseudocleft Sentences for Focus
Spanish Cleft and Pseudocleft Sentences for Focus
In this lesson, you will use Spanish focus constructions with and structures such as , , , and . These constructions identify the element that answers an implicit or explicit question such as who, what, where, or when. You will preserve required prepositions and avoid copying an English cleft word for word when Spanish uses a different structure.
Focus the person with ser + quien
Neutral:
— Marta called the client.
Focused:
— It was Marta who called the client.
The implicit question is:
— Who called the client?
Plural person
— It was Marta and Ana who prepared the proposal.
The focused element is plural, and the structure reflects that plurality.
Focus the action with a pseudocleft
— What Marta did was call the client.
The focused information is the action .
Focus what is needed
— What we need is more time.
Implicit question:
— What do we need?
Focus a location
— Where the problem lies is in the funding.
The focused phrase keeps the preposition .
Focus a time
— It was in May that the change began.
Alternative pseudocleft:
— When the change began was in May.
Preserve the preposition required by the focused role
Neutral:
— I spoke with Elena.
Focused:
— The person I spoke with was Elena.
Do not drop merely because the phrase has moved into a focus construction.
Another prepositional focus
Neutral:
— I was referring to the budget.
Focused:
— What I was referring to was the budget.
The verb referirse a requires a, and the focused answer keeps al.
Focus a cause
— What explains the difference is the change in procedure.
This construction presents as the answer to the implicit question about cause.
Focus a result
— The most important thing was that waiting time decreased.
This evaluative focus construction highlights a proposition rather than a person or noun phrase.
Do not copy an English cleft mechanically
For broad standard production, prefer:
— It was Marta who called.
rather than mechanically building a structure equivalent to English “It is Marta that called” without checking whether the Spanish pattern is natural in the intended variety and register.
Clefts answer a discourse question
Question:
— Who changed the date?
Answer:
— It was the client who changed the date.
Question:
— What did the client change?
Answer:
— What the client changed was the date.
Same event, different focus structure.
Do not overuse clefts
Neutral order is often better when no contrast or correction is needed:
— The client changed the date.
A cleft is useful when the discourse actually needs to identify or contrast one element.
A practical focus-construction method
- Identify the implicit question: who, what, where, when, or which action.
- Choose a cleft or pseudocleft only if highlighting that answer serves the discourse.
- Use with an appropriate relative or pseudocleft structure.
- Preserve prepositions selected by the verb or focused phrase.
- Keep agreement coherent with plural focused elements.
- Do not copy an English cleft mechanically.
- Return to neutral order when special focus is unnecessary.
From Structural Focus to Prosodic Focus
You can now use cleft and pseudocleft structures to identify the focal element. The next lesson teaches Spanish Prosody for Focus, Contrast, and Strategic Pausing.
