Speaking Task: Sustain a Discussion with Speakers of Different Spanish Varieties
Speaking Task: Sustain a Discussion with Speakers of Different Spanish Varieties
In this speaking task, you will maintain a connected discussion with speakers who use different regional vocabulary, pronunciation patterns, and forms of address. Your goal is continuous comprehension and interaction, not stopping at every difference. You will clarify selectively, paraphrase shared meaning, respect valid alternatives, and keep your own Spanish internally consistent.
Discussion topic
Three participants are discussing whether remote work should remain available two days per week.
Speaker A:
Yo creo que dos días en casa ayudan bastante, sobre todo porque uno se ahorra el viaje. — I think two days at home help quite a lot, especially because you save the commute.
Speaker B:
A mí también me sirve, pero si querés coordinar algo rápido con el equipo, a veces es más fácil estar todos en la oficina. — It works for me too, but if you want to coordinate something quickly with the team, sometimes it is easier for everyone to be in the office.
Speaker C:
En mi caso depende del proyecto. Hay semanas en las que necesito hablar con mucha gente y otras en las que prefiero trabajar más tranquilo. — In my case, it depends on the project. There are weeks when I need to talk with many people and others when I prefer to work more quietly.
Recognize the position despite variation
Speaker B uses:
si querés — if you want.
You do not need to switch your own production to vos to understand the argument.
Shared meaning:
Los tres aceptan que el trabajo remoto puede ser útil, pero creen que la coordinación cambia según la tarea. — All three accept that remote work can be useful, but they believe coordination changes depending on the task.
Clarify selectively
Speaker A:
El problema es que a veces la guagua va llena y llegas cansado antes de empezar. — The problem is that sometimes the bus is full and you arrive tired before starting, in a variety where guagua means bus.
Learner:
Solo para confirmar: ¿“guagua” aquí significa “autobús”? — Just to confirm: does “guagua” here mean “bus”?
Speaker A:
Sí, exactamente. — Yes, exactly.
Learner:
Perfecto. Entonces tu argumento es que el desplazamiento también afecta a la energía con la que empiezas el día. — Perfect. So your argument is that the commute also affects the energy with which you start the day.
The learner asks one focused question and immediately returns to the argument.
Do not stop for every unfamiliar sound
If Speaker C pronounces a familiar word differently but the sentence is clear, continue.
Useful response:
Entiendo. ¿Y eso cambia cuando tenéis una reunión importante? — I understand. And does that change when you have an important meeting?
The conversation advances without a pronunciation lesson.
Paraphrase across varieties
Speaker B:
Si el equipo está repartido, cuesta más arreglar algo al tiro. — If the team is spread out, it is harder to fix something right away, using al tiro with the meaning immediately.
Learner:
O sea, cuando surge un problema urgente, te parece más fácil resolverlo inmediatamente si estáis juntos. — So, when an urgent problem arises, you think it is easier to solve it immediately if you are together.
The learner uses a more widely shared synonym without telling Speaker B to stop using the regional phrase.
Respect different address systems
Speaker B may say:
vos querés — you want.
Speaker C may say:
tú quieres — you want.
Your own response can remain:
Yo creo que depende del tipo de coordinación. — I think it depends on the type of coordination.
You do not need to alternate address systems unnecessarily.
Handle a misunderstanding
Learner:
¿Quieres decir que prefieres eliminar el trabajo remoto? — Do you mean that you prefer to eliminate remote work?
Speaker C:
No, no. Digo que algunos proyectos necesitan más días presenciales. — No, no. I am saying that some projects need more in-person days.
Learner:
Entendido: no propones eliminarlo, sino ajustar los días según el proyecto. — Understood: you are not proposing to eliminate it, but to adjust the days according to the project.
The learner corrects the interpretation without blaming the speaker's variety.
Ask for a term only when it blocks the argument
Speaker A:
En mi empresa usamos un término interno para ese tipo de turno.
If the term is central:
¿Puedes explicarme ese término? Creo que lo necesito para entender la propuesta. — Can you explain that term? I think I need it to understand the proposal.
If it is not central, continue with the main idea.
Keep a common summary
Summary:
Hasta ahora veo tres puntos: el desplazamiento puede afectar al bienestar, la coordinación presencial ayuda en algunas tareas y la cantidad de días debería adaptarse al tipo de proyecto. — So far I see three points: commuting can affect well-being, in-person coordination helps with some tasks, and the number of days should be adapted to the type of project.
This gives all speakers a shared formulation that does not depend on one regional expression.
Invite correction
¿He resumido bien vuestras posiciones? — Have I summarized your positions correctly?
This allows participants to repair any meaning lost in cross-variety paraphrase.
Performance criteria
- Maintain the main topic despite pronunciation and vocabulary differences.
- Clarify only when a difference blocks an important part of the argument.
- Paraphrase regional expressions in shared language without labeling them wrong.
- Track each speaker's position rather than focusing only on their accent.
- Accept valid alternatives in forms of address and vocabulary.
- Keep your own expression coherent instead of imitating every speaker.
- Repair misunderstandings by checking meaning, not by criticizing the speaker's variety.
- End with a shared summary and invite correction.
From Cross-Variety Discussion to Literary Language
You can now sustain a discussion across regional differences while keeping the focus on ideas and shared meaning. The next lesson teaches Spanish Literary Language for Imagery, Voice, and Narrative Perspective.
