Speaking Task: Deliver the Same Spanish Message with Different Focal Points
Speaking Task: Deliver the Same Spanish Message with Different Focal Points
In this speaking task, you will deliver the same factual message several times while changing only the focal point. You will coordinate word order, stress, and pauses so that the listener can hear whether you are highlighting the person, the action, the object, or the result without accidentally changing the underlying facts.
Base message
— Marta delivered the final report to the committee on Monday.
The factual content contains four main elements:
- Marta — Marta
- entregó — delivered
- el informe final — the final report
- el lunes — on Monday
Focus the person
Context:
Someone thinks Carlos delivered the report.
Delivery:
— It was MARTA who delivered the final report to the committee on Monday.
The focus answers the question “who?” while the rest of the event remains unchanged.
Focus the object
Context:
Someone thinks Marta delivered only the preliminary notes.
Delivery:
— What Marta delivered to the committee on Monday was THE FINAL REPORT.
The corrected element is the object, not the person or date.
Focus the time
Context:
Someone thinks the delivery happened on Tuesday.
Delivery:
— It was ON MONDAY that Marta delivered the final report to the committee.
Focus the action
Context:
Everyone knows that Marta handled the report, but the listener thinks she only reviewed it.
Delivery:
— What Marta did on Monday was DELIVER the final report to the committee.
Focus the result
Context:
The discussion is about what changed after Monday.
Delivery:
— The result was that the committee received the final report on Monday.
This version organizes the same event from the outcome rather than the actor.
Do not change facts while changing focus
Incorrect shift:
— It was MARTA who sent the preliminary report on Tuesday.
This changes the action, object, and date, so it is no longer a different focal delivery of the same message.
Use pauses strategically
Person focus:
— It was MARTA / who delivered the final report to the committee on Monday.
Object focus:
Lo que entregó Marta / fue EL INFORME FINAL. — What Marta delivered / was THE FINAL REPORT.
Time focus:
— It was ON MONDAY / when Marta delivered the final report.
The pause should support the information structure, not split a tightly connected phrase randomly.
Listener correction
Listener:
¿Quieres corregir quién lo entregó o cuándo lo entregó? — Do you want to correct who delivered it or when it was delivered?
Speaker:
— Who delivered it. The date was already clear: it was MARTA who delivered it.
The speaker identifies the intended focal dimension and adjusts the delivery.
Second listener request
Listener:
— Now I want you to highlight the result, not the person.
Speaker:
— The result was that the committee received the final report on Monday.
Speaking mission
- Deliver the base message neutrally.
- Repeat it with person focus.
- Repeat it with object focus.
- Repeat it with time focus.
- Repeat it with action focus.
- Deliver one result-focused version.
- Keep every factual element constant unless the task explicitly asks for a different paraphrase of the same event.
- Adjust the focus after one listener request.
Performance criteria
- The listener can hear which element is focal.
- The speaker can explain why that focus was chosen.
- Word order, stress, and pausing point to the same focal element.
- Shared information remains relatively backgrounded.
- The factual proposition does not change when focus changes.
- The speaker can redirect focus immediately when the listener asks.
From Controlled Focus to Mood and Information Status
You can now deliver the same facts with different focal points without changing their content. The next lesson teaches Spanish Mood Choice with Known, Assumed, and Rejected Information.
