C1 Extended Reading Project: Connect a Spanish Novel with Its Cultural Context
In this extended reading project, you will connect Las luces del puerto with a cultural context dossier created specifically for the course. The town and dossier are fictional learning materials, not claims about a real Spanish-speaking community. Your task is to use documented information from the dossier to illuminate the novel while avoiding the reduction of the whole work to a direct reflection of its context.
Project source rule
Use two kinds of evidence:
evidencia textual de la novela — textual evidence from the novel.
información documentada en el dossier cultural del curso — information documented in the course cultural dossier.
Keep them separate in your notes before connecting them.
Course cultural dossier: Puerto Norte
Dossier fact 1:
— Between 1995 and 2015, Puerto Norte lost part of its fishing activity and employment linked to seasonal tourism increased.
Dossier fact 2:
— During that period, many young families moved to larger cities for study and work.
Dossier fact 3:
— Older homes in the center acquired a different economic value because some were converted into temporary accommodation.
Dossier fact 4:
— In local interviews included in the dossier, several residents describe a tension between preserving family ties and adapting to new economic opportunities.
Dossier fact 5:
— The dossier does not state that all families experienced these changes in the same way.
Novel evidence: migration
Novel:
— Mateo left the town to accept a job far away.
Context connection:
— Mateo's departure can be read within a context in which work pushes part of the young population out of the town.
This connection adds context, but it does not prove that Mateo is a statistical representative of every young resident.
Novel evidence: family house
Novel:
— Mateo said that selling was the most sensible thing.
Dossier connection:
— The change in the economic value of older homes helps explain why selling the house can appear as a practical option and not only an emotional one.
Do not reduce the house to economics
However, the novel repeatedly connects the house to memory, silence, and family relationships.
Therefore:
— The economic context illuminates one part of the decision, but does not exhaust the meaning of the house in the novel.
Context and motif
The port lights, the old house, and the return to the town can acquire additional resonance in a community undergoing economic and demographic change.
Careful formulation:
— The documented changes in Puerto Norte make the contrast between permanence and mobility already present in the plot more visible.
Do not write:
— The port lights directly symbolize tourism.
The dossier does not support that specific symbolic equation.
Link distant sections
Chapter 1:
Volví al puerto después de doce años. — I returned to the port after twelve years.
Chapter 5:
— Mateo told me that he had not left because he wanted to.
Chapter 8:
— I thought of signals that could be seen from far away.
Project question:
— How does the idea of “leaving” and “returning” change across these three moments?
Use cultural context to sharpen, not replace, close reading
Weak contextual reading:
— The novel is about economic change because the dossier talks about economic change.
Stronger:
— The economic context helps explain why labor mobility and the value of the house are materially important decisions; however, the novel transforms those elements into conflicts of memory, loyalty, and family communication.
Attribution model
When using dossier information:
— According to the course cultural dossier, part of the young population moved to larger cities during the period analyzed.
When using the novel:
— In Chapter 5, Mateo explains that he accepted a job far away after a family argument.
Do not merge the two sources into one undocumented statement.
Project deliverable
Produce an extended reading with four sections:
- an interpretive thesis about the novel
- two or three contextual facts from the dossier
- textual analysis connecting at least three distant moments in the novel
- a final section explaining what the context clarifies and what it cannot decide
Quality criteria
- You demonstrate that you followed the novel across several chapters.
- You connect distant textual evidence rather than relying on one scene.
- You attribute cultural information explicitly to the course dossier.
- You distinguish contextual fact from literary interpretation.
- You avoid treating a fictional character as a direct statistical example of an entire community.
- You explain at least one limit of the contextual approach.
- Your conclusion preserves the literary work's independence from the dossier.
From Contextual Reading to Spoken and Written Grammar
You can now connect an extended literary work to documented contextual information without reducing the work to its context. The next lesson teaches Spanish Spoken and Written Grammar: Fragmentation, Density, and Register.
