Using C1 Feedback to Refine Spanish Precision, Discourse Control, and Flexibility
Using C1 Feedback to Refine Spanish Precision, Discourse Control, and Flexibility
In this lesson, you will turn C1 feedback into a precise improvement plan. Instead of saying “I need better Spanish,” you will identify whether a recurring problem comes from a missing linguistic resource, choosing the wrong resource under pressure, or failing to adapt to the audience. You will then test whether improvement transfers across writing, speaking, and different subject areas.
Start from documented performance
Suppose your C1 checkpoint shows three repeated patterns.
Patrón 1: a veces utilizo pronombres cuando hay más de un referente posible. — Pattern 1: I sometimes use pronouns when more than one referent is possible.
Patrón 2: bajo presión, convierto una posibilidad en una afirmación más fuerte. — Pattern 2: under pressure, I turn a possibility into a stronger assertion.
Patrón 3: en textos formales, mantengo expresiones demasiado conversacionales. — Pattern 3: in formal texts, I keep expressions that are too conversational.
Diagnose the reference problem
Weak production:
Elena habló con Marta después de que ella revisó el informe. — Elena spoke with Marta after she reviewed the report.
Ella could refer to Elena or Marta.
Safer revision:
Elena habló con Marta después de que Marta revisó el informe. — Elena spoke with Marta after Marta reviewed the report.
The problem is not lack of pronouns. It is failing to reactivate the noun when the reference chain becomes unstable.
Turn diagnosis into a specific target
Target:
Cuando haya dos referentes posibles, repetiré el nombre o el sintagma nominal antes de continuar la cadena de referencia. — When there are two possible referents, I will repeat the name or noun phrase before continuing the reference chain.
This target is observable and can be checked in new tasks.
Diagnose claim-strength drift
Source meaning:
Los datos sugieren que la medida podría reducir las esperas. — The data suggest that the measure could reduce waiting times.
Under-pressure paraphrase:
La medida reduce las esperas. — The measure reduces waiting times.
The second version upgrades both evidential strength and certainty.
Ask whether the resource is missing
If you can produce:
podría reducir — could reduce.
sugiere que — suggests that.
no permite concluir que — does not allow us to conclude that.
then the problem may not be lack of vocabulary or grammar. It may be failure to select the correct resource quickly enough.
Target for claim strength
Antes de resumir una fuente, identificaré primero si su conclusión es un hecho, una posibilidad, una inferencia o una recomendación. — Before summarizing a source, I will first identify whether its conclusion is a fact, a possibility, an inference, or a recommendation.
Diagnose audience mismatch
Conversational version:
Bueno, al final lo dejamos para la semana que viene. — Well, in the end we left it until next week.
Formal written context:
Finalmente, la decisión se aplazó hasta la semana siguiente. — Finally, the decision was postponed until the following week.
If you know both versions but choose the first in a formal report, the problem is audience adaptation, not grammatical competence.
Separate three causes of weakness
| Diagnosis | What it means | Example response |
|---|---|---|
| Missing resource | You do not yet have the needed form or expression available. | Learn and practice the form. |
| Selection under pressure | You know the resource but do not retrieve or choose it reliably. | Use timed contrastive practice. |
| Audience mismatch | You produce correct Spanish that does not fit the context. | Practice the same message in several registers. |
Build a cross-mode test
Reference target in writing:
Reescribe un párrafo con tres participantes y elimina toda referencia ambigua. — Rewrite a paragraph with three participants and remove every ambiguous reference.
Reference target in speaking:
Explica una cadena de acontecimientos con tres personas sin utilizar un pronombre cuando el referente pueda confundirse. — Explain a chain of events with three people without using a pronoun when the referent could be confused.
If the improvement appears only in writing, it has not yet transferred fully.
Build a cross-topic test
Do not practice claim strength only in one familiar topic.
Test it in:
un informe científico — a scientific report.
una discusión económica — an economic discussion.
una propuesta profesional — a professional proposal.
un comentario cultural — a cultural commentary.
The same control should survive topic change.
Measure improvement precisely
Weak goal:
Quiero sonar más natural. — I want to sound more natural.
Measurable goal:
En tres tareas consecutivas, mantendré la misma fuerza de afirmación que la fuente y justificaré cualquier cambio de certeza. — In three consecutive tasks, I will preserve the same claim strength as the source and justify any change in certainty.
Use error clusters, not isolated mistakes
One ambiguous pronoun may be accidental. Five similar reference failures across several tasks form a pattern worth targeting.
Useful question:
¿Este error aparece de forma repetida en contextos distintos? — Does this error appear repeatedly in different contexts?
Revise the plan after new evidence
Suppose your reference accuracy improves in writing but remains unstable in spontaneous speech.
Updated goal:
Practicaré reformulaciones orales de diez segundos en las que tenga que sustituir un pronombre ambiguo por un nombre claro sin reiniciar toda la frase. — I will practice ten-second oral reformulations in which I replace an ambiguous pronoun with a clear name without restarting the whole sentence.
A practical C1 refinement method
- Collect repeated evidence from real C1 tasks.
- Classify the weakness as missing resource, poor selection under pressure, or audience mismatch.
- Write one observable target for each recurring pattern.
- Practice the target in both speaking and writing.
- Change the topic so that improvement is not tied to one familiar domain.
- Measure whether the same control appears across several consecutive tasks.
- Revise the goal when new evidence shows that the weakness is narrower or broader than expected.
From C1 Refinement to C2 Implicit Meaning
You can now build an improvement plan from documented patterns rather than vague impressions. The next lesson teaches Inferring Unstated Intentions in Complex Spanish Conversations.
