Editing Spanish Reference Chains and Agreement in a Long Draft

Editing Spanish Reference Chains and Agreement in a Long Draft

In this lesson, you will edit reference and agreement across several paragraphs rather than sentence by sentence. You will reactivate a noun when a referent has become distant, replace vague pronouns when several candidates are active, and recheck every surviving reference after moving or deleting a paragraph.

Initial draft

Read the draft as one connected text.

— The city council presented a training program for small businesses. The proposal includes workshops on digital sales and individual advice. Several business associations supported the program because they believe it can help businesses with little experience in e-commerce.

— The economic development department and the municipal employment office participated in the design. This one explained that the first phase will last six months and that afterward they will evaluate its results.

— Some shopkeepers, however, doubt that the workshops will be sufficient. They point out that the cost of adapting websites and payment systems remains a barrier. The program also includes a small financial grant. This will be reviewed after the first three months.

Problem 1: agreement with a coordinated subject

Draft:

— The economic development department and the municipal employment office participated in the design.

Two coordinated institutions form the subject, so the verb should be plural:

— The economic development department and the municipal employment office participated in the design.

Problem 2: vague demonstrative after two feminine institutions

Draft:

— This one explained that the first phase will last six months.

Both and the broader institutional context are possible competitors. Repeat the name:

— The municipal employment office explained that the first phase will last six months.

Problem 3: unclear plural subject later in the sentence

Draft:

— and that afterward they will evaluate its results.

Who will evaluate: both institutions, the office, or another team?

If both institutions are responsible, write:

— and that both institutions will later evaluate the program's results.

Problem 4: pronoun may be unnecessary

Draft:

— They point out that the cost of adapting websites and payment systems remains a barrier.

The subject is already clear from , so a smoother version is:

— They point out that the cost of adapting websites and payment systems remains a barrier.

Problem 5: broad esto after two possible ideas

Draft:

— The program also includes a small financial grant. This will be reviewed after the first three months.

Does refer to the grant, the program, or the entire support package?

If the grant itself will be reviewed:

— The amount of this grant will be reviewed after the first three months.

Revised paragraph sequence

— The city council presented a training program for small businesses. The proposal includes workshops on digital sales and individual advice. Several business associations supported the program because they believe it can help businesses with little experience in e-commerce.

— The economic development department and the municipal employment office participated in the design. The municipal employment office explained that the first phase will last six months and that both institutions will later evaluate the program's results.

— Some shopkeepers, however, doubt that the workshops will be sufficient. They point out that the cost of adapting websites and payment systems remains a barrier. The program also includes a small financial grant. The amount of this grant will be reviewed after the first three months.

Moving a paragraph can break reference

Suppose you move the paragraph about to the beginning and leave this opening:

— Some shopkeepers doubt that it is sufficient.

At that point, no previous noun tells the reader what refers to.

Repair:

— Some shopkeepers doubt that the training program is sufficient to solve the technological barriers.

Deleting a paragraph can create an orphan reference

Suppose an earlier paragraph introduced:

— a grant of up to 2,000 euros.

A later paragraph begins:

— This measure will be evaluated in December.

If you delete the paragraph that introduced the grant, may no longer have a clear antecedent.

Repair by naming the surviving referent:

— The advisory program will be evaluated in December.

Agreement can break after editing too

Original:

— The committee and the association published their recommendations.

After deleting , you must also change the verb:

— The committee published its recommendations.

Long-draft editing pass

  1. Read the whole draft and list the main active referents.
  2. Mark pronouns, demonstratives, possessives, and summary labels.
  3. Check whether each has one clear antecedent at that point in the text.
  4. Reactivate a full noun phrase when the referent is distant or competitors have appeared.
  5. Check agreement with the grammatical head of every complex subject.
  6. After moving or deleting a paragraph, reread all later pronouns and agreement forms.
  7. Replace orphan references created by structural editing.
  8. Prefer a repeated noun over an elegant but ambiguous pronoun.

You can now preserve reference and agreement across structural revisions. The next lesson teaches Spanish and : Verb Complements and Avoiding and .
