Spanish Research Workshop: Build an Evidence-Based Briefing from Multiple Sources
This workshop combines research question design, source selection, note-taking, paraphrasing, attribution, synthesis, and evidence-based conclusion. Every important claim in the final briefing should be traceable to a source in the workshop set, and every conclusion should remain within the limits of the evidence.
Workshop question
— Should a university permanently extend the nighttime opening hours of its libraries?
Source A: access records
— During a four-week trial, entries between eight and ten increased by 23% in the library with extended hours. After ten, average occupancy was below 15% of capacity.
Source B: student survey
— Of 360 surveyed students, 67% said they would value having the library available until midnight during exams. The survey was voluntary.
Source C: staffing note
— The operations department estimates that keeping all libraries open until midnight would require additional security and cleaning staff. The note does not include a final annual cost.
Source D: comparison library
— A library that kept its usual hours did not record a comparable increase in entries during the same period.
Stage 1: narrow the question
Broad question:
¿Son buenas las bibliotecas nocturnas? — Are nighttime libraries good?
Researchable question:
— Do the usage, stated-demand, and operating-cost data justify a permanent extension until midnight?
Stage 2: source-to-claim notes
Source A supports:
— The extension was associated with more entries between eight and ten during the trial.
Source A also limits:
— Occupancy after ten was low.
Source B supports:
— A majority of respondents said they would value opening until midnight.
Source B does not directly support:
— A majority would actually use the library after ten.
Stage 3: identify evidence gaps
Missing:
— We do not know the final annual cost of extending hours in all libraries.
Missing:
— We do not have usage data covering more than four weeks.
These gaps matter to a permanent decision.
Stage 4: build a cautious synthesis
— The records show increased entries in the early evening, while the survey indicates high stated demand for longer opening hours. However, occupancy after ten was low and a complete annual cost estimate is still missing.
Stage 5: decide what the evidence changes
The evidence supports some extension, but does not yet clearly support midnight as the optimal permanent closing time.
Provisional conclusion:
— The data justify studying a stable extension into the early evening, but are not sufficient to recommend that all libraries remain open until midnight permanently.
Stage 6: recommendation
— I would recommend a second eight-week trial with staggered closing times, for example at ten, eleven, and twelve, and with a complete record of occupancy, cost, and required staffing.
The recommendation is designed to collect the missing evidence.
Stage 7: traceability check
Claim:
— Occupancy after ten was low.
Trace to:
Fuente A. — Source A.
Claim:
— Stated preference for longer hours was a majority among respondents.
Trace to:
Fuente B. — Source B.
Claim:
— The final annual cost is not yet available.
Trace to:
Fuente C. — Source C.
Do not create unsupported bridge claims
Unsupported:
— Students who say they want longer hours will necessarily be frequent nighttime users.
This bridge between preference and behavior is not established by the workshop sources.
Briefing model
— The available evidence supports an additional extension of opening hours, but does not demonstrate that midnight is the optimal closing time for all libraries. During a four-week trial, entries increased by 23% between eight and ten at the library with extended hours, while a comparison library did not show a similar increase. However, occupancy after ten remained below 15% of capacity. A voluntary survey shows a strong preference for having the library available until midnight, but that preference is not equivalent to actual use. In addition, the extension requires extra staff and there is still no final annual cost estimate. I would recommend a longer second trial with staggered closing times and joint measurement of occupancy, cost, and staffing needs.
Workshop quality criteria
- The research question is narrow enough to answer with the available sources.
- Every major factual claim can be traced to a source.
- Paraphrases preserve source scope and certainty.
- Preference, observed behavior, and cost estimates remain distinct.
- Evidence gaps influence the recommendation.
- The conclusion is no stronger than the combined source set.
- The final briefing integrates sources by issue rather than listing them mechanically.
From Research Briefing to Cross-Paragraph Reference
