Spanish Academic Vocabulary for Concepts, Methods, and Relationships

Spanish Academic Vocabulary for Concepts, Methods, and Relationships

In this lesson, you will use general academic vocabulary to discuss concepts, methods, evidence, relationships, findings, and limitations. The goal is not to memorize specialist terminology from one field, but to build precise language that works across many academic topics.

Concept and definition

— concept

— definition

— conceptual framework

— This concept refers to the way one variable changes in relation to another.

Method and tool are not the same

— method

— tool

— The method describes the general research procedure.

— The tool is the instrument used within that procedure.

For example, an interview can be a method for collecting data, while a recording platform can be a tool used to conduct it.

Hypothesis and result are different

— hypothesis

— result

— The hypothesis proposes a relationship that must be tested.

— The result describes what was observed after the analysis.

Do not present a hypothesis as if it were already a finding.

General vocabulary for relationships

  • — the relationship between X and Y
  • — the association between X and Y
  • — the influence of X on Y
  • — the effect of X on Y
  • — the dependence of X on Y

— The data show an association between waiting time and user satisfaction.

This does not automatically establish causation.

Academic verbs and their complements

— to analyze a phenomenon

— to evaluate a hypothesis

— to examine a relationship

— to identify a pattern

— to establish a comparison

— to formulate a research question

— The study examines the relationship between service use and participant age.

Findings and evidence

— findings

— evidence

— data

— The main findings indicate a difference between the two groups.

— The available evidence does not allow us to explain why that difference appeared.

Limitation and scope

— limitation

— scope

— One important limitation is the small sample size.

— The scope of the study is limited to students from one university.

Model and explanation

— model

— explanation

— The model organizes several factors within one explanation.

A model can simplify reality. It should not be treated as reality itself.

Distinguish nearby terms

Method:

— The study uses semi-structured interviews.

Tool:

— The hypothesis proposes that greater flexibility is associated with greater satisfaction.

— The results show an association in the analyzed sample.

A practical academic-vocabulary method

  1. Identify whether you are naming a concept, method, tool, hypothesis, result, or limitation.
  2. Learn common verbs together with the nouns they select.
  3. Use relationship words precisely: , , , .
  4. Keep hypothesis and finding separate.
  5. State scope and limitation explicitly.
  6. Prefer general academic vocabulary that supports reasoning over unnecessary specialist terminology.

From Academic Vocabulary to Lecture Comprehension

You can now discuss concepts, methods, relationships, findings, and limitations with greater precision. The next lesson teaches you to understand extended Spanish lectures on unfamiliar topics.
