Matching Spanish Descriptions to People

Matching Spanish descriptions to people

In this listening lesson, you will hear short descriptions of different people and match each description to the correct person. Focus on the details that distinguish one person from another: appearance, personality, feeling, and location.

During each first listening attempt, use the Spanish audio only. Decide who the description matches before reading the transcript or English meaning.

What to listen for

You do not need to understand every word. Listen for a few high-value clues.

  • appearance: , , bajo, baja, pelo negro, pelo rubio, ojos verdes
  • feeling or condition: , , contento, contenta

Use adjective endings and the forms of ser and estar to connect the description to the correct person.

Listening set 1: height and hair

Listen first. Match each description to one of these people:

  • Person A: a tall man with short black hair
  • Person B: a tall woman with long blond hair

Audio 1:

Audio 2:

Now check the transcripts and meanings:

— He is tall. He has short black hair.

— She is tall. She has long blond hair.

Audio 1 matches Person A. Audio 2 matches Person B. The adjective ending helps: points to a masculine singular subject, while points to a feminine singular subject.

Listening set 2: personality

Listen first. Match each description to one of these people:

  • Person A: a friendly woman
  • Person B: a serious man

Audio 1:

Audio 2:

Now check:

— She is friendly.

— He is serious.

Audio 1 matches Person A. Audio 2 matches Person B.

Listening set 3: eye color and personality

Listen first. Match each description to one of these people:

  • Person A: a kind man with green eyes
  • Person B: a shy woman with brown eyes

Audio 1:

Audio 2:

Now check:

— He is kind. He has green eyes.

— She is shy. She has brown eyes.

Audio 1 matches Person A. Audio 2 matches Person B. Notice that does not show masculine or feminine gender by itself, so the eye description and the candidate profiles help complete the match.

Listening set 4: feeling and location

Now listen for information expressed with estar.

Match each description to one of these people:

  • Person A: tired and at home
  • Person B: happy and at the hotel

Audio 1:

Audio 2:

Now check:

— He is tired. He is at home.

— She is happy. She is at the hotel.

Audio 1 matches Person A. Audio 2 matches Person B. The first adjective tells you the person’s current feeling or condition, and the second sentence gives location.

Using gender endings as listening clues

Adjective endings often help you decide which person is being described.

  • — tall, masculine singular
  • — tall, feminine singular
  • — tired, masculine singular
  • — tired, feminine singular
  • — friendly, masculine singular
  • — friendly, feminine singular

Do not depend on endings alone, because some adjectives such as — kind and — young have the same singular form for masculine and feminine subjects. Combine all the clues you hear.

Listening set 5: several clues in one description

Listen first. Match the description to the correct person.

  • Person A: Laura, a tall friendly woman with long brown hair
  • Person B: Marta, a short serious woman with short black hair

Audio:

Now check:

— She is tall and friendly. She has long brown hair.

The description matches Person A, Laura. The clues , , castaño, and largo work together.

Listening set 6: identifying a person from a group

Imagine three people:

  • Carlos: tall, friendly, black hair
  • Luis: short, serious, brown hair
  • Daniel: young, shy, blond hair

Listen before reading the meaning:

Now check:

— He is short and serious. He has brown hair.

The description matches Luis. You do not need every possible detail. Two or three strong clues are enough.

Listening set 7: distinguishing ser from estar through meaning

Listen for whether the speaker describes a general characteristic or a current state.

Match each description to the correct person:

  • Person A: a generally friendly woman who is tired now
  • Person B: a generally serious man who is happy now

Audio 1:

Audio 2:

Now check:

— She is friendly. She is tired.

— He is serious. He is happy.

Use the meaning of each clue to match the correct person. A fuller comparison between ser and estar comes in the next lesson.

Handling omitted subject pronouns

— he and — she once the person is clear. That means you may hear several sentences without an explicit pronoun.

Listen to the whole description:

Now check:

— He / She is young. He / She is kind. He / She is at home.

These forms alone do not identify gender. You must use the surrounding task, the available people, or earlier context to decide who the description refers to.

A complete matching challenge

Imagine these three people:

  • Ana: tall, kind, green eyes, at home
  • Marta: short, serious, brown eyes, at the hotel
  • Laura: tall, shy, blue eyes, at home

Listen to each description before checking the answer.

Description 1:

Description 2:

Description 3:

Now check:

— She is short and serious. She has brown eyes. She is at the hotel.

This matches Marta.

— She is tall and shy. She has blue eyes. She is at home.

This matches Laura.

— She is tall and kind. She has green eyes. She is at home.

This matches Ana.

A reliable listening method

When matching descriptions to people, use a simple sequence:

  1. Identify one strong clue such as height, hair, eyes, or personality.
  2. Listen for adjective gender and number when the form makes them audible.
  3. Notice whether the description gives a current feeling or location with estar.
  4. Eliminate people who do not match the clues.
  5. Listen again only for the detail that remains uncertain.

You do not need to translate every sentence word by word in real time. Your task is to identify the person correctly.

From matching descriptions to comparing ser and estar

You can now listen to short Spanish descriptions and match appearance, personality, current feeling, and location details to the correct person. The next lesson brings ser and estar together so you can identify people and describe their condition more systematically.
