Listening for Dates, Times, and Places in Spanish Plans

Listening for Dates, Times, and Places in Spanish Plans

Person B:

Person A:

Write only the final plan.

Check

Person A: — On Monday we are going to work at eight in the office.

Person B: — I cannot on Monday. I can on Tuesday at nine.

Person A: — Good. On Tuesday we are going to work at nine in the office.

The final plan is Tuesday at nine in the office. Both the day and the time changed.

Repeat the final details to confirm them

When a plan changes, repeating the final details helps prevent confusion.

— So, Wednesday at six in the library?

Person A: — Yes, Wednesday at six in the library.

You do not need a new grammar structure. Repeat the day, time, or place that matters and listen for confirmation.

Do not keep the first detail automatically

In short planning conversations, the first time or day you hear may be only a proposal. Listen for a rejection or correction such as — I cannot, then keep listening for the new detail and the final acceptance.

Listening for the action first

If the sentence is long, first identify the planned action.

  • — I am going to work
  • — I am going to study
  • — we are going to eat
  • — they are going to leave / go out

Then listen again for the date, time, and place.

Listening for calendar information

Days and dates can occur near the beginning of the sentence.

  • — On Monday I am going to work.
  • — On July 10 I am going to study.

Listening for the place

Place phrases often contain en or a familiar destination.

  • — at home
  • — in the office
  • — at the university
  • — to the park

A practical listening method

  1. Identify the form of ir and the planned action.
  2. Listen for a weekday or calendar date.
  3. Listen for a clock time or part of the day.
  4. Listen for the place.
  5. Write the details separately.
  6. If a detail changes, cross out the first proposal and record the last accepted version.
  7. Repeat the final day, time, or place as a confirmation when needed.
  8. Check the transcript only after your first listening attempt.

From Listening to Plans to Inviting Someone

You can now listen for the action, date, time, and place in short Spanish plans and identify the final accepted details when a plan changes. The next lesson teaches you how to invite someone and how to accept or decline a simple invitation.
