Pedir, Servir, and Repetir: Present-Tense E-to-I Changes in Spanish

Pedir, Servir, and Repetir: Present-Tense E-to-I Changes in Spanish

In this lesson, you will learn three common Spanish verbs that change e to i in much of the present tense: — to ask for / to request / to order, — to serve, and repetir — to repeat.

The central pattern is simple: the stressed e in the verb stem changes to i in most present-tense forms, but not in nosotros / nosotras or vosotros / vosotras.

The E-to-I pattern

Look at the basic contrast:

  • → — to ask for / I ask for
  • → — to serve / I serve
  • repetir → — to repeat / I repeat

The infinitive has e in the stem. In many present-tense forms, that e becomes i.

Pedir — to ask for, request, or order

Subject Spanish English
yo I ask for / request / order
tĂș you ask for / request / order
él / ella / usted he / she asks for; you ask for
nosotros / nosotras we ask for / request / order
vosotros / vosotras you all ask for / request / order
ellos / ellas / ustedes they ask for; you all ask for

Notice the pattern: , , , , , . The e changes to i except in and .

Using pedir in everyday requests

  • — I ask for / order water.
  • — I ask for / order a coffee.
  • — I ask for / order a salad.
  • — We order rice with chicken.
  • — They ask for the bill.

is useful when you request something from another person.

Pedir and querer are not identical

You already know querer — to want. focuses more directly on asking for or ordering something.

  • — I want a coffee.
  • — I order / ask for a coffee.

Both can appear in practical situations, but the meaning is slightly different.

Asking what someone orders or requests

Use the familiar question word quĂ© — what.

— What do you order / ask for?

Person A: — What do you order / ask for?

Person B: — I order a salad.

Servir — to serve

Subject Spanish English
yo I serve
tĂș you serve
él / ella / usted he / she serves; you serve
nosotros / nosotras we serve
vosotros / vosotras you all serve
ellos / ellas / ustedes they serve; you all serve

Again, the e changes to i in , , , and , but not in or .

Using servir with food and drinks

  • — I serve coffee.
  • — I serve water.
  • — He / she serves the soup.
  • — We serve the meal / food.
  • — They serve coffee and tea.

This verb is especially useful in restaurant and hospitality contexts.

Using servir with familiar workplaces

  • — I work in a restaurant and serve food.
  • — I work in a hotel and serve coffee.
  • — We serve food in the restaurant.

The new verb fits naturally with the jobs and workplaces vocabulary you already know.

Repetir — to repeat

Subject Spanish English
yo I repeat
tĂș you repeat
él / ella / usted he / she repeats; you repeat
nosotros / nosotras we repeat
vosotros / vosotras you all repeat
ellos / ellas / ustedes they repeat; you all repeat

The same pattern appears: , , , , , .

Using repetir for communication

You already know how to ask for repetition when you do not understand. Repetir lets you describe the action directly.

  • — I repeat the name.
  • — I repeat the number.
  • — He / she repeats the information.
  • — We repeat the address.
  • — They repeat the phone number.

Asking someone to repeat politely

You already know the useful question:

— Can you repeat, please?

Here, repetir stays in the infinitive because it follows puede. This is not the same structure as — he / she repeats or you repeat.

Compare:

  • — Can you repeat, please?
  • — You repeat the number.

Comparing the three verbs

Infinitive Yo form Meaning
to ask for / request / order
to serve
repetir to repeat

All three verbs show the same e-to-i change in the stem.

The forms that do not change

Nosotros / nosotras and vosotros / vosotras keep the original e.

  • — we ask for / order
  • — you all ask for / order
  • — we serve
  • — you all serve
  • — we repeat
  • — you all repeat

This is the same general idea you saw earlier with other present-tense vowel-changing verbs: the nosotros and vosotros forms do not use the stem change.

Comparing yo and nosotros

  • — I order coffee.
  • — We order coffee.
  • — I serve the meal.
  • — We serve the meal.
  • — I repeat the number.
  • — We repeat the number.

The contrast makes the unchanged nosotros stem easy to see.

Comparing tĂș and vosotros

  • — You ask for water.
  • — You all ask for water.
  • — You serve coffee.
  • — You all serve coffee.
  • — You repeat the name.
  • — You all repeat the name.

Using pedir in a restaurant exchange

Person A: — What do you order?

Person B: — I order rice with chicken and water.

Person A: — And Ana?

Person B: — She orders a salad and coffee.

Using servir in a restaurant context

Read:

— The waiter serves the food and the waitress serves the drinks.

Another example:

— In this restaurant they serve rice, soup, and salad.

Using repetir when information is unclear

Person A: — My phone number is six, four, two, eight, one.

Person B: — Excuse me. Can you repeat, please?

Person A: — Yes. I repeat the number: six, four, two, eight, one.

This uses repetir in a familiar communication problem.

Choosing the correct verb by meaning

Use when someone requests or orders something.

— I ask for / order water.

Use when someone gives food or drink to another person.

— I serve water.

Use repetir when someone says or does something again.

— I repeat the number.

A short workplace sequence

— I work in a restaurant. I serve food and coffee. The customers order food and drinks.

The sentence combines familiar workplace vocabulary with and .

A short communication sequence

— I do not understand the number. I ask for repetition and the person repeats the number.

The key target form here is — repeats.

Recognizing the stem change quickly

When you see one of these verbs in the present tense, first identify the subject.

  • yo → , , — I ask for, serve, repeat
  • tĂș → , , — you ask for, serve, repeat
  • Ă©l / ella / usted → , , — he / she / you ask for, serve, repeat
  • nosotros / nosotras → , , — we ask for, serve, repeat
  • vosotros / vosotras → , , — you all ask for, serve, repeat
  • ellos / ellas / ustedes → , , — they / you all ask for, serve, repeat

A practical conjugation method

Use this sequence:

  1. Identify the infinitive: , , or repetir.
  2. Identify the subject.
  3. If the subject is nosotros / nosotras or vosotros / vosotras, keep e in the stem.
  4. For the other present-tense subjects, change e to i.
  5. Add the correct present-tense ending.

From E-to-I Changes to Following Instructions

You can now use , , and repetir in the present tense and recognize their e-to-i vowel-changing pattern. The next lesson focuses on following simple Spanish classroom and workplace instructions.
