Clothes, Colors, Sizes, and Basic Materials in Spanish
Clothes, Colors, Sizes, and Basic Materials in Spanish
In this lesson, you will learn common Spanish words for clothes, colors, sizes, and a few basic materials. You will use familiar adjective agreement and demonstratives such as — this, — that, and — that over there to identify and describe clothing items.
The goal is to recognize and describe simple clothing choices. Asking for sizes and trying clothes on comes in the next lesson.
Common clothing items
Learn each clothing word together with its article.
- — the T-shirt
- — the shirt
- — the pair of trousers / pants
- — the trousers / pants
- — the skirt
- — the dress
- — the jacket
- — the coat

- — the shoes
Some clothing words are normally used in the plural, such as — trousers / pants and — shoes.
More useful clothing words
- — the socks
- — the hat
- — the cap
- — the bag / handbag
You do not need a large fashion vocabulary at this stage. Focus on items that are common and easy to identify.
Common colors
These are useful basic color adjectives.
- — red
- — blue
- — green
- — black
- — white
- — yellow
- — gray
- — brown
Some color adjectives change for gender and number, while others keep the same masculine and feminine singular form.
Colors that change for gender
Adjectives such as , , , and change to match feminine nouns.
- — black trousers / a black pair of trousers
- — a black shirt
- — a red dress
- — a red T-shirt
- — a white sweater
- — a white skirt
The color adjective agrees with the noun being described.
Colors that do not change for masculine and feminine singular
Colors such as , , , and use the same form with masculine and feminine singular nouns.
- — a blue sweater
- — a blue shirt
- — a green dress
- — a green jacket
- — gray trousers / a gray pair of trousers
- — a gray skirt
Making color adjectives plural
When the clothing noun is plural, the color adjective also becomes plural.
- — the black trousers / pants
- — the white shoes
- — the red T-shirts
- — the blue sweaters
- — the green jackets
This follows the adjective agreement rules you already know.
Describing one clothing item
Use ser to give a basic description.
- — The T-shirt is red.
- — The shirt is blue.
- — The dress is black.
- — The jacket is green.
- — The sweater is gray.
Describing plural clothing items
- — The trousers / pants are black.
- — The shoes are white.
- — The T-shirts are red.
- — The jackets are green.
Use son with plural subjects.
Common size words
Three basic size words are:
- — small
- — medium
- — large
With feminine nouns, and change to pequeña and mediana.
- — a small T-shirt
- — a medium shirt
- — a large jacket
Using talla for clothing size
A useful noun is — the size.
- — the small size
- — the medium size
- — the large size
For now, focus on recognizing these size labels. Asking whether a size is available comes in the next lesson.
Reading size symbols such as S, M, and L
Clothing labels often use symbols such as S, M, and L in addition to words.
- — size S / small
- — size M / medium
- — size L / large
You may see a label such as:
— This T-shirt is size M.
These symbols are useful for recognition, but do not assume that an S, M, or L has exactly the same measurements in every country, shop, or brand. The label identifies a size system; it does not guarantee one fixed international measurement.
Combining color and size
You can describe one item with both a color and a size.
- — a red and small T-shirt
- — a blue and medium shirt
- — a black and large jacket
- — a gray and large sweater
Each adjective must match the noun where agreement is required.
Pointing to clothes with este and esta
Use or esta for an item near you.
- — these trousers / this pair of trousers
- — this sweater
- — this T-shirt
- — this jacket
For example:
— This T-shirt is red.
— This sweater is blue.
Pointing to clothes with ese and esa
Use or esa for an item farther from you.
- — those trousers / that pair of trousers
- — that sweater
- — that T-shirt
- — that jacket
For example:
— That jacket is black.
— That sweater is gray.
Pointing to distant clothes with aquel and aquella
Use or aquella for an item clearly farther away.
- — those trousers over there / that pair of trousers over there
- — that coat over there
- — that T-shirt over there
- — that skirt over there
For example:
— That coat over there is brown.
— That skirt over there is yellow.
Basic material words
These common material words can help you identify simple clothing descriptions.
- — cotton
- — wool
- — leather
Use — of / made of to connect the clothing item with the material.
- — a cotton T-shirt
- — a wool sweater
- — a leather jacket
For this lesson, learn these as practical noun phrases.
Combining material and color
You can describe both what an item is made of and its color.
- — a white cotton T-shirt
- — a blue wool sweater
- — a black leather jacket
The color adjective agrees with the clothing noun. The material phrase with stays unchanged.
Using querer with clothing
You can use querer to say which item you want.
- — I want this T-shirt.
- — I want that sweater.
- — I want that jacket over there.
- — I want the black shoes.
Using preferir to compare clothing
Use preferir to choose between visible items.
Person A: — What do you prefer, this T-shirt or that T-shirt?
Person B: — I prefer this T-shirt.
Another example:
Person A: — What do you prefer, the blue sweater or the gray sweater?
Person B: — I prefer the blue sweater.
Asking about color
A useful question is ¿ qué color es...? — What color is...?
For now, learn it as a practical question frame.
Person A: — What color is the T-shirt?
Person B: — It is red.
Person A: — What color is the sweater?
Person B: — It is blue.
Recognizing a simple clothing description
Read:
— This T-shirt is red and small. It is made of cotton.
Another example:
— That coat over there is black and large.
The demonstrative identifies the item, while the adjectives and material phrase describe it.
A practical description method
When describing a clothing item, use this sequence:
- Name the clothing item.
- Add a demonstrative if you need to point it out.
- Add the color.
- Add the size if useful.
- Add + material if the material matters.
- Check adjective agreement.
From Clothing Descriptions to Asking About Sizes and Trying Things On
You can now name common clothing items and describe their color, size, and basic material while pointing out specific items with demonstratives. The next lesson teaches you how to ask about sizes and try on clothes in Spanish.
