Speaking Task: Introduce a Friend and Describe Your Family in Spanish

Speaking task: introduce a friend and describe your family in Spanish

This speaking task brings together several skills you have already learned: introducing another person, using family vocabulary, choosing possessive adjectives, describing appearance and personality, and keeping adjective agreement accurate.

The goal is to give a short, clear spoken introduction and family description without turning it into a long biography.

Part 1: introduce a friend

Begin by introducing your friend to another person.

  • Te presento a Laura. — Let me introduce you to Laura.
  • Te presento a Daniel. — Let me introduce you to Daniel.

If the listener is someone you address formally, use the formal introduction pattern you already know.

  • Le presento a Laura. — Let me introduce you to Laura.

For this task, choose the introduction that matches the listener.

Add one identity detail

After the introduction, add one useful fact such as occupation, nationality, or origin.

  • Es estudiante. — She / He is a student.
  • Es profesora. — She is a teacher.
  • Es mexicano. — He is Mexican.
  • Es de Canadá. — She / He is from Canada.

One clear detail is enough before you move to the description.

Describe your friend’s appearance

Use familiar appearance vocabulary and keep adjective agreement correct.

  • Es alto. — He is tall.
  • Es alta. — She is tall.
  • Es bajo. — He is short.
  • Es baja. — She is short.
  • Tiene el pelo negro. — He / She has black hair.
  • Tiene el pelo rubio. — He / She has blond hair.
  • Tiene los ojos verdes. — He / She has green eyes.
  • Tiene los ojos marrones. — He / She has brown eyes.

Choose only one or two appearance details that help identify the person.

Describe your friend’s personality

Add one or two personality adjectives.

  • Es simpático. — He is friendly.
  • Es simpática. — She is friendly.
  • Es amable. — He / She is kind.
  • Es tímido. — He is shy.
  • Es tímida. — She is shy.
  • Es divertido. — He is fun / amusing.
  • Es divertida. — She is fun / amusing.

You can use muy to strengthen one description.

  • Es muy amable. — He / She is very kind.
  • Es muy simpática. — She is very friendly.

Model friend introduction

Here is a complete short model:

Te presento a Laura. Es estudiante. Es alta y muy simpática. Tiene el pelo castaño y los ojos verdes. — Let me introduce you to Laura. She is a student. She is tall and very friendly. She has brown hair and green eyes.

This introduction gives the listener the person’s name, one identity detail, appearance, and personality.

Part 2: describe your family

Now give a short description of your family. Start with how many people there are or which close family members you have.

  • Somos cuatro. — There are four of us.
  • Tengo un hermano. — I have a brother.
  • Tengo una hermana. — I have a sister.
  • Tengo dos hermanos. — I have two siblings / brothers.

Then introduce individual family members with possessive adjectives.

  • Mi madre es Ana. — My mother is Ana.
  • Mi padre es Carlos. — My father is Carlos.
  • Mi hermana es Elena. — My sister is Elena.
  • Mi hermano es Luis. — My brother is Luis.

Add one useful detail about each family member

You do not need to describe every person fully. One useful detail for each person is enough.

  • Mi madre es médica. — My mother is a doctor.
  • Mi padre es profesor. — My father is a teacher.
  • Mi hermana es muy amable. — My sister is very kind.
  • Mi hermano es alto. — My brother is tall.

This keeps the family description clear and manageable.

Using our with shared family members

If you are describing family members shared by you and a sibling, use the forms of nuestro you already know.

  • Nuestra madre es Ana. — Our mother is Ana.
  • Nuestro padre es Carlos. — Our father is Carlos.
  • Nuestros abuelos son de México. — Our grandparents are from Mexico.

Remember that nuestro changes to match the noun that follows it.

Model family description

Here is one complete model:

Somos cuatro. Tengo un hermano. Mi madre es Ana y mi padre es Carlos. Mi madre es médica y mi padre es profesor. Mi hermano se llama Luis. Es alto y muy amable. — There are four of us. I have a brother. My mother is Ana and my father is Carlos. My mother is a doctor and my father is a teacher. My brother’s name is Luis. He is tall and very kind.

For this task, treat Mi hermano se llama Luis. — My brother’s name is Luis. as a familiar personal-information pattern built from the introduction language you already know.

Keep the speaker and the people described clear

When you move from one person to another, use a name, family relationship, él, or ella if necessary.

Mi madre es Ana. Es médica. Mi padre es Carlos. Es profesor. — My mother is Ana. She is a doctor. My father is Carlos. He is a teacher.

The new family noun or name makes the change of subject clear.

Use adjective agreement during the task

Check that adjectives match the person you describe.

  • Mi hermano es simpático. — My brother is friendly.
  • Mi hermana es simpática. — My sister is friendly.
  • Mis hermanos son altos. — My siblings / brothers are tall.
  • Mis hermanas son altas. — My sisters are tall.

Agreement is part of the speaking task, not a separate grammar exercise.

Use natural word stress

While you speak, keep the stressed syllables of familiar words clear.

  • hermana — sister
  • profesor — teacher
  • médica — doctor
  • México — Mexico

You do not need to exaggerate the stress. Say the whole word naturally while keeping the correct stressed syllable.

Add one current state with estar

Use ser for identity or a characteristic in this task, and use estar for one current state or feeling.

  • Daniel es simpático. — Daniel is friendly.
  • Hoy Daniel está contento. — Daniel is happy today.
  • Mi hermana es divertida. — My sister is fun.
  • Mi hermana está cansada hoy. — My sister is tired today.

This gives you one small, practical choice between ser for a characteristic and estar for a current condition.

Your complete speaking task

Complete the task in two parts.

  1. Introduce one friend.
  2. Give one identity detail about the friend.
  3. Describe the friend’s appearance with one or two details.
  4. Describe the friend’s personality with one or two adjectives.
  5. Describe your family size or say which close family members you have.
  6. Identify at least two family members with mi, mis, nuestro, nuestra, nuestros, or nuestras.
  7. Add one useful fact about each family member.
  8. Add one current state or feeling for one person with estar.
  9. Choose ser for identity or characteristics and estar for that current state.
  10. Keep adjective agreement and word stress clear.

A complete model response

Te presento a Daniel. Es de Canadá. Es alto y simpático. Tiene el pelo corto y los ojos marrones. Hoy Daniel está contento. Somos cuatro en mi familia. Mi madre es Laura. Es médica y muy amable. Mi padre es Carlos. Es profesor. Tengo una hermana. Se llama Marta. Es joven y divertida. — Let me introduce you to Daniel. He is from Canada. He is tall and friendly. He has short hair and brown eyes. Today Daniel is happy. There are four people in my family. My mother is Laura. She is a doctor and very kind. My father is Carlos. He is a teacher. I have a sister. Her name is Marta. She is young and fun.

The response is successful because it introduces the friend, gives a balanced description, and then gives organized family information using grammar and vocabulary from earlier lessons, including an appropriate contrast between ser and estar.

From describing people to talking about daily activities

You can now introduce a friend and describe your family using possessive adjectives, family vocabulary, appearance and personality adjectives, ser, estar, tener, and natural word stress. The next lesson begins a new topic: talking about what you do each day in Spanish.
