Spanish Numbers 101–1,000 and Prices

Spanish Numbers 101–1,000 and Prices

In this lesson, you will learn how to build and recognize Spanish numbers from 101 to 1,000 and use them in everyday prices.

You already know numbers up to 100. Now you will add the hundreds and combine them with familiar tens and units.

Starting with 100 and 101

Spanish uses two related forms around 100:

  • — one hundred
  • — one hundred one
  • — one hundred two
  • — one hundred ten
  • — one hundred twenty

Use for exactly 100. Use ciento when another number follows.

Comparing cien and ciento

  • — one hundred euros
  • — one hundred one euros
  • — one hundred ten euros
  • — one hundred fifty euros

The key distinction is exact 100 versus 101–199.

The hundreds

These are the main hundred forms you need from 200 to 900:

  • — two hundred
  • — three hundred
  • — four hundred
  • — five hundred
  • — six hundred
  • — seven hundred
  • — eight hundred
  • — nine hundred

Notice the irregular forms — five hundred, — seven hundred, and — nine hundred.

Building numbers after a hundred

After the hundred, add the tens and units you already know.

  • — two hundred one
  • — two hundred ten
  • — two hundred twenty
  • — two hundred thirty-five
  • — three hundred forty-two
  • — four hundred sixty-eight

The part after the hundred follows the same rules as numbers below 100.

Using y only between tens and units

Use y — and between the tens and units when needed, just as you already do below 100.

  • — two hundred thirty-five
  • — five hundred forty-two
  • — eight hundred seventy-nine

Do not insert y between the hundred and the tens.

For example:

  • — three hundred twenty
  • not y veinte

Numbers from 101 to 199

Use ciento plus the remaining number.

  • — one hundred one
  • — one hundred fifteen
  • — one hundred twenty-five
  • — one hundred thirty-eight
  • — one hundred ninety-nine

Numbers from 200 to 299

  • — two hundred
  • — two hundred five
  • — two hundred twenty-two
  • — two hundred fifty
  • — two hundred ninety-one

Numbers from 300 to 499

  • — three hundred
  • — three hundred twelve
  • — three hundred forty-five
  • — four hundred
  • — four hundred seventy-six

Numbers from 500 to 699

  • — five hundred
  • — five hundred twenty
  • — five hundred eighty-three
  • — six hundred
  • — six hundred ninety-four

Numbers from 700 to 999

  • — seven hundred
  • — seven hundred thirty
  • — eight hundred
  • — eight hundred forty-seven
  • — nine hundred
  • — nine hundred ninety-nine

Reaching 1,000

The number 1,000 is:

— one thousand

Do not use un before when you simply mean 1,000.

  • — one thousand euros
  • — one thousand

Hundreds agree with feminine nouns

When a hundred number from 200 onward directly modifies a feminine noun, the ending changes to -cientas.

  • — two hundred people
  • — three hundred people
  • — five hundred people
  • — seven hundred people
  • — nine hundred people

This agreement does not affect prices with euros because euros is masculine.

Reading prices in whole euros

Large prices use the same number patterns.

  • — one hundred twenty euros
  • — two hundred fifty euros
  • — three hundred ninety euros
  • — five hundred euros
  • — nine hundred ninety-nine euros
  • — one thousand euros

Reading a written price

If you see 125 €, read it as:

— one hundred twenty-five euros

If you see 340 €, read it as:

— three hundred forty euros

If you see 599 €, read it as:

— five hundred ninety-nine euros

Matching prices to number words

Price Spanish English
110 € one hundred ten euros
225 € two hundred twenty-five euros
480 € four hundred eighty euros
750 € seven hundred fifty euros
999 € nine hundred ninety-nine euros

Asking how much something costs

You already know the useful question:

— How much does it cost?

Now you can understand larger answers.

Person A: — How much does it cost?

Person B: — It costs one hundred fifty euros.

Person A: — How much does it cost?

Person B: — It costs four hundred twenty euros.

Comparing two prices

Read these two prices:

  • — two hundred euros
  • — three hundred fifty euros

The second price is larger because 350 is greater than 200.

Listening for the hundred first

When you hear a large number, identify the hundred before processing the rest.

For example:

— seven hundred forty-two

First identify — seven hundred. Then process cuarenta y dos — forty-two.

Recognizing easily confused hundreds

Pay special attention to the irregular hundred forms.

  • — five hundred
  • — seven hundred
  • — nine hundred

These do not follow a simple number + cientos pattern exactly, so they are worth learning as complete forms.

Building a number step by step

To build 684:

  1. Start with — six hundred.
  2. Add ochenta — eighty.
  3. Add y cuatro — and four.

The result is ochenta y cuatro — six hundred eighty-four.

To build 931:

  1. Start with — nine hundred.
  2. Add treinta — thirty.
  3. Add y uno — and one.

The result is treinta y uno — nine hundred thirty-one.

A short price-reading exercise

Read each written price aloud before checking the answer.

  • 135 € → ciento treinta y cinco euros — one hundred thirty-five euros
  • 260 € → sesenta euros — two hundred sixty euros
  • 417 € → diecisiete euros — four hundred seventeen euros
  • 582 € → ochenta y dos euros — five hundred eighty-two euros
  • 746 € → cuarenta y seis euros — seven hundred forty-six euros
  • 1,000 € → — one thousand euros

A practical number-reading method

When you read or hear a number from 101 to 1,000, use this sequence:

  1. Identify the hundred.
  2. Use only for exactly 100 and ciento for 101–199.
  3. Add the remaining number without y between the hundred and the tens.
  4. Use y only between tens and units where required.
  5. Remember the irregular hundreds , , and .
  6. Use for exactly 1,000.

From Larger Prices to Demonstratives

You can now build and recognize Spanish numbers from 101 to 1,000 and use them in larger prices. The next lesson teaches este, ese, and aquel so you can point out and distinguish things in Spanish.
