Spanish Shopping Mission: Choose Clothes and Buy Food Within a Budget
Spanish Shopping Mission: Choose Clothes and Buy Food Within a Budget
This lesson is a practical shopping mission. You will use Spanish you already know to choose clothes, check sizes and prices, buy food and drinks, and keep your total within a fixed budget.
No new grammar is required. The goal is to combine familiar language accurately in one realistic sequence.
Your mission
You have a budget of 100 euros.
Tengo cien euros. — I have one hundred euros.
You need to:
- choose one clothing item
- make sure the size is suitable
- choose food and a drink
- check all prices
- calculate the total
- stay within the 100-euro budget
Step 1: Read the clothing options
| Item | Size | Price |
|---|---|---|
| camiseta roja — red T-shirt | talla mediana — medium size | 25 € — 25 euros |
| camisa azul — blue shirt | talla grande — large size | 35 € — 35 euros |
| jersey gris — gray sweater | talla mediana — medium size | 45 € — 45 euros |
| chaqueta negra — black jacket | talla grande — large size | 60 € — 60 euros |
First, identify the item you prefer.

- Prefiero la camisa azul. — I prefer the blue shirt.
- Prefiero el jersey gris. — I prefer the gray sweater.
- Prefiero la chaqueta negra. — I prefer the black jacket.
Step 2: Check the size
Use the size question you already know.
- ¿Qué talla es? — What size is it?
- ¿Tiene esta camiseta en talla mediana? — Do you have this T-shirt in a medium size?
- ¿Tiene esta camisa en talla grande? — Do you have this shirt in a large size?
A simple positive answer is:
Sí, tenemos talla mediana. — Yes, we have a medium size.
A simple negative answer is:
No, no tenemos talla mediana. — No, we do not have a medium size.
Step 3: Ask to try on the clothing item
If the size is available, use the familiar shop phrase.
- ¿Puedo probarme esta camiseta? — Can I try on this T-shirt?
- ¿Puedo probarme esta camisa? — Can I try on this shirt?
- ¿Puedo probarme este jersey? — Can I try on this sweater?
- ¿Puedo probarme esta chaqueta? — Can I try on this jacket?
Step 4: Check the clothing price
Use the familiar price question.
¿Cuánto cuesta? — How much does it cost?
Possible answers from the table are:
- Cuesta veinticinco euros. — It costs twenty-five euros.
- Cuesta treinta y cinco euros. — It costs thirty-five euros.
- Cuesta cuarenta y cinco euros. — It costs forty-five euros.
- Cuesta sesenta euros. — It costs sixty euros.
Step 5: Read the food and drink options
| Item | Price |

| ensalada con tomate — salad with tomato | 10 € — 10 euros |
| arroz con pollo — rice with chicken | 14 € — 14 euros |
| pasta con queso — pasta with cheese | 12 € — 12 euros |
| sopa de tomate — tomato soup | 8 € — 8 euros |
| agua — water | 2 € — 2 euros |
| café con leche — coffee with milk | 4 € — 4 euros |
| zumo de naranja — orange juice | 5 € — 5 euros |
Step 6: Choose your food
Use quiero or prefiero to make a choice.
- Quiero una ensalada con tomate. — I want a salad with tomato.
- Quiero arroz con pollo. — I want rice with chicken.
- Quiero pasta con queso. — I want pasta with cheese.
- Prefiero la sopa de tomate. — I prefer the tomato soup.
Step 7: Adjust an ingredient if needed

- Quiero una ensalada sin cebolla. — I want a salad without onion.
- Quiero pasta sin queso. — I want pasta without cheese.
- Quiero café con leche. — I want coffee with milk.
- Quiero café sin leche. — I want coffee without milk.
If you need to check one ingredient first, use:
- ¿Tiene cebolla? — Does it have onion?

Step 8: Choose a drink
- Quiero agua. — I want water.
- Quiero café con leche. — I want coffee with milk.

Example mission A
Suppose you choose:
- camiseta roja — red T-shirt: 25 € — 25 euros
- arroz con pollo — rice with chicken: 14 € — 14 euros
- agua — water: 2 € — 2 euros
The total is 41 euros.
Son cuarenta y un euros en total. — It is forty-one euros in total.
This is within the 100-euro budget.
Example mission B
Suppose you choose:
- chaqueta negra — black jacket: 60 € — 60 euros
- pasta con queso — pasta with cheese: 12 € — 12 euros
- café con leche — coffee with milk: 4 € — 4 euros
The total is 76 euros.
Son setenta y seis euros en total. — It is seventy-six euros in total.
This also stays within the budget.
Example mission C: a total that is too high
Suppose you choose:
- chaqueta negra — black jacket: 60 € — 60 euros
- camisa azul — blue shirt: 35 € — 35 euros
- arroz con pollo — rice with chicken: 14 € — 14 euros
- zumo de naranja — orange juice: 5 € — 5 euros
The total is 114 euros.
Son ciento catorce euros en total. — It is one hundred fourteen euros in total.
This is above the 100-euro budget, so you must change the selection.
Reducing the total
You can replace one expensive choice with a cheaper one.
For example, replace the chaqueta negra — black jacket at 60 euros with the camiseta roja — red T-shirt at 25 euros.
The new selection is:
- camiseta roja — red T-shirt: 25 € — 25 euros
- camisa azul — blue shirt: 35 € — 35 euros
- arroz con pollo — rice with chicken: 14 € — 14 euros
- zumo de naranja — orange juice: 5 € — 5 euros
The new total is 79 euros.
Son setenta y nueve euros en total. — It is seventy-nine euros in total.
Now the selection is within the budget.
Asking the total
Use the practical question from the previous listening lesson.
¿Cuánto es en total? — How much is it in total?
A possible answer is:
Son setenta y nueve euros. — It is seventy-nine euros.
Checking the total yourself
Do not rely only on the spoken total. Add the item prices and compare your result with what you hear.
For example:
- 35 € + 14 € + 5 € = 54 €
In Spanish:
Son cincuenta y cuatro euros en total. — It is fifty-four euros in total.
A complete clothing-shop exchange
Person A: Perdón. ¿Tiene esta camiseta roja en talla mediana? — Excuse me. Do you have this red T-shirt in a medium size?
Person B: Sí, tenemos talla mediana. — Yes, we have a medium size.
Person A: ¿Puedo probarme esta camiseta? — Can I try on this T-shirt?
Person B: Sí. — Yes.
Person A: ¿Cuánto cuesta? — How much does it cost?
Person B: Cuesta veinticinco euros. — It costs twenty-five euros.
Person A: Quiero esta camiseta. — I want this T-shirt.
A complete food-shop exchange
Person A: ¿Qué lleva la ensalada? — What is in the salad?
Person B: Lleva tomate y cebolla. — It contains tomato and onion.
Person A: Quiero una ensalada sin cebolla, por favor. — I want a salad without onion, please.
Person A: Y quiero agua. — And I want water.
Combining both purchases
After choosing the clothing item, food, and drink, check the combined amount.
Person A: ¿Cuánto es en total? — How much is it in total?
Person B: Son treinta y siete euros. — It is thirty-seven euros.
In this example, the T-shirt costs 25 euros, the salad costs 10 euros, and the water costs 2 euros. The total is 37 euros.
Your independent shopping mission
Use the tables in this lesson and create one valid shopping combination.
Your combination must include:
- one clothing item
- one food item
- one drink
- a total of 100 euros or less
Then say your choices in Spanish using familiar structures such as:
- Quiero esta camiseta. — I want this T-shirt.
- Quiero arroz con pollo. — I want rice with chicken.
- Quiero agua. — I want water.
- Son cuarenta y un euros en total. — It is forty-one euros in total.
A practical mission checklist
During a real or simulated shopping task, use this sequence:
- identify the clothing item
- check its size
- ask the price
- choose the item
- choose food and a drink
- adjust ingredients if necessary
- add all prices
- ask for the final total
- confirm that the total stays within your budget
From Shopping to Jobs, Workplaces, and Study
