Handling a Simple Spanish Phone Call and Leaving a Message
Handling a Simple Spanish Phone Call and Leaving a Message
In this lesson, you will open a simple phone call, identify yourself, ask for a person or service, explain your purpose, leave a message if the person is unavailable, confirm numbers, and end the call clearly.
Open the call
- — Good morning.
- — Hello, I am calling to speak with Ana Ruiz.
- — Good morning. I want to speak with the reservations department.
Identify yourself
- — I am Carlos Martín.
- — My name is Laura Pérez.
- — I am calling from Norte company.
State the purpose
- — I am calling about my booking.
- — I am calling to change an appointment.
- — I need information about a shipment.
If the person is unavailable
Person A: — Ana is not available now.
Person B: — All right. Can I leave a message?
Leave the essential message
Use your name, number, purpose, and callback request.
— I am Carlos Martín. My number is 612 345 709. I am calling about Friday's meeting. Can she call me this afternoon, please?
Ask for a callback
- — Can he / she call me, please?
- — Please tell him / her to call me.
The second sentence is a useful fixed phone-message phrase here. This lesson does not teach a full system for indirectly reporting commands.
Ask the other person to slow down
- — Can you speak more slowly, please?
- — Can you repeat, please?
Confirm a number
Person A: — The number is 934 520 681.
Person B: ¿934 520 681? — 934 520 681?
Person A: — Yes, correct.
Spell or confirm a name
- — How is the last name spelled?
- — Did you say Martín?
Complete call
Person A: — Good morning. Central Hotel.
Person B: — Good morning. I am Laura Pérez. I am calling about my booking. I want to speak with Marta, please.
Person A: — Marta is not available now.
Person B: — Can I leave a message?
Person A: — Yes.
Person B: — My number is 611 804 252. I want to change the booking date. Can she call me this afternoon, please?
Person A: — All right.
Person B: — Thank you very much. Goodbye.
