Asking About Life Experiences and Sharing Recent News in Spanish

Asking About Life Experiences and Sharing Recent News in Spanish

In this lesson, you will begin asking about life experiences and sharing recent news with a few useful present-perfect phrases. Treat these forms as practical chunks for now. The full present-tense conjugation of haber and the complete formation system are taught in the next lesson.

Ask whether someone has had an experience

A useful pattern with tú is:

  • — Have you traveled to Spain?
  • — Have you visited Madrid?
  • — Have you worked in a hotel?
  • — Have you studied Spanish before?

For now, learn has + participle as a complete experience pattern. Do not try to derive the full haber system yet.

Answer yes or no

  • — Yes, I have traveled to Spain.
  • — No, I have not traveled to Spain.
  • — Yes, I have worked in a hotel.
  • — No, I have not studied Spanish before.

Experience first, details second

The present-perfect question can ask whether the experience has happened at all. If the answer is yes, use the preterite for a finished time detail.

Person A: — Have you traveled to Spain?

Person B: — Yes, I have traveled to Spain.

Person A: — When did you travel?

Person B: — I traveled last year.

For this lesson, — last year is a useful past-time expression.

Another experience and detail exchange

Person A: — Have you visited Madrid?

Person B: — Yes, I have visited Madrid.

Person A: — When did you go?

Person B: — I went in June.

Ask about a work experience

Person A: — Have you worked in a restaurant?

Person B: — Yes, I have worked in a restaurant.

Person A: — When did you work there?

Person B: — I worked there in 2024.

Share recent news

You can also use a present-perfect chunk for news that feels connected to the present.

  • — I have found a job.
  • — I have finished the course.
  • — I have moved / changed homes.
  • — I have started a new job.

For this lesson, — found is a useful recent-news form. Its full participle pattern is not analyzed here.

React to recent news

  • — That's great!
  • — Very good!
  • — Perfect!

Short recent-news exchange

Person A: — I have found a job.

Person B: — That's great! Where?

Person A: — In a hotel.

Do not force an exact date into an experience question

Compare these two purposes:

  • — Have you visited Valencia? This asks whether the experience has happened.
  • — When did you visit Valencia? This asks for a finished-time detail.

Do not use the present perfect as a replacement for every past sentence

If you say exactly when a finished event happened, use the past tense you already know.

  • — I have visited Madrid.
  • — I visited Madrid in 2025.

Speaking practice

Ask a partner two experience questions:

  • — Have you traveled to another country?
  • — Have you worked in an office?

If the answer is yes, ask one preterite follow-up question such as ¿Cuándo...? — When...?

A practical experience method

  1. Use a limited ¿Has + participle...? chunk to ask whether an experience has happened.
  2. Answer with he + participle or no he + participle.
  3. If you need a finished time detail, switch to a preterite question.
  4. Use the same limited pattern to share recent news connected to the present.
  5. Do not derive the complete haber paradigm yet.

From Experience Chunks to the Full Present Perfect

You can now ask about a simple experience and share a recent piece of news with a few practical present-perfect chunks. The next lesson teaches the full present-tense forms of haber and regular past participles.
