Reading a Short Spanish Biography and Reconstructing Its Timeline

Reading a Short Spanish Biography and Reconstructing Its Timeline

In this reading lesson, you will extract birth information, study periods, work, and major moves from a short biography. You will separate completed milestones from background and connect every date to the correct person and stage.

Biography: Ana Torres

Read the biography before checking the timeline.

Birth

— Ana Torres was born in Seville in 1990.

The person, place, and year all belong to the birth milestone.

Childhood background

— When she was a child, she lived with her family near downtown.

Era and vivía describe the surrounding childhood stage. They are not single milestones with exact endpoints in this sentence.

Move and study milestone

— At age eighteen she moved to Madrid and started studying.

The age applies to both completed events in the sentence.

Study completion

— She finished her studies in 2012.

Work period

— Afterward she worked in a hotel for four years.

Trabajó presents the four-year period as a completed whole.

Second move and new work

— In 2017 she moved to Valencia and started working in an office.

Later background

— When she was thirty years old, she lived near the sea and traveled a lot for work.

Tenía, vivía, and viajaba describe the surrounding situation at that life stage.

Reconstruct the timeline

  1. — Ana was born in Seville.
  2. — childhood: she lived with her family near downtown.
  3. — at age 18: she moved to Madrid and started studying.
  4. — 2012: she finished her studies.
  5. — afterward: she worked four years in a hotel.
  6. — 2017: she moved to Valencia and started working in an office.
  7. — at age 30: she lived near the sea and traveled a lot for work.

Do not invent a missing date

The biography gives “during four years” for the hotel job, but it does not explicitly state every calendar year involved. If a task asks only for confirmed dates, do not manufacture a start date that the text does not state directly.

Separate milestone from background

Compare:

  • — She moved to Valencia in 2017. Milestone.
  • — She lived near the sea. Background situation.

Track the person carefully

If a biography later introduces another person, do not transfer Ana's dates to that person. Names, pronouns, and subject agreement control the timeline.

Reading Task 2

Read:

Meaning

— Carlos was born in 1985.

— As a child, he lived in a small town.

— In 2005 he went to Madrid to study.

— He finished his studies in 2009 and afterward worked in a store.

— In 2015 he moved to another city.

A practical biography-reading method

  1. Identify the person first.
  2. Mark every explicit date and age.
  3. Attach each time reference to the correct event or background stage.
  4. Use preterite forms to identify completed milestones.
  5. Use imperfect forms to identify surrounding states and habits.
  6. Put the confirmed events in chronological order.
  7. Do not invent a date that the biography does not explicitly support.

From Biography Timelines to Cuando, Mientras, and De Repente

You can now reconstruct a short biography from its dates, milestones, and background information. The next lesson teaches you how to link past events with cuando, mientras, and de repente.
