Speaking Task: Welcome a New Neighbor and Answer Their Questions in Spanish

This speaking task combines greetings, neighborhood vocabulary, asking and answering questions, offering help, and using saber and conocer appropriately.

Your goal

Welcome a new neighbor, answer practical questions about nearby services, and offer useful help without giving information that you do not actually know.

Start with a welcome

  • Hola. Bienvenido al barrio. — Hello. Welcome to the neighborhood.
  • Hola. Bienvenida al barrio. — Hello. Welcome to the neighborhood.
  • Me llamo Ana. Vivo aquí. — My name is Ana. I live here.

Ask whether the neighbor knows the area

¿Conoces el barrio? — Do you know the neighborhood?

Possible reply:

No, no conozco la zona. — No, I do not know the area.

Give one useful local fact

  • Hay un supermercado cerca. — There is a supermarket nearby.
  • La farmacia está al lado del banco. — The pharmacy is next to the bank.
  • La estación está enfrente del hotel. — The station is opposite the hotel.

Answer a knowledge question

Person A: ¿Sabes dónde está la farmacia? — Do you know where the pharmacy is?

Person B: Sí. Está al lado del banco. — Yes. It is next to the bank.

Use saber and conocer for different meanings

  • Sé dónde está la estación. — I know where the station is.
  • Conozco un buen restaurante. — I know a good restaurant.

The first is information. The second is familiarity with a place.

Offer help

  • ¿Te ayudo? — Shall I help you?
  • ¿Te ayudo con la maleta? — Shall I help you with the suitcase?

Ask permission if you need to do something

¿Puedo escribir la dirección? — Can I write the address?

Clarify an unclear question

  • ¿Puede repetir, por favor? — Can you repeat, please?
  • ¿Qué lugar? — Which place?
  • ¿La farmacia? — The pharmacy?

Do not invent information

If you do not know an answer, say so clearly.

Lo siento, no sé. — I am sorry, I do not know.

If you are not familiar with a place:

No conozco ese restaurante. — I do not know that restaurant.
