Speaking Task: Tell Someone What Happened on a Recent Outing in Spanish
Speaking Task: Tell Someone What Happened on a Recent Outing in Spanish
This is a speaking task. You will tell someone about a recent outing using the preterite forms you already know. Your account should make the time, place, companions, main events, and result easy to understand.
Your speaking goal
A complete short account should answer most of these questions:
- ¿Cuándo fue? — When was it?
- ¿Adónde fuiste? — Where did you go?
- ¿Con quién fuiste? — Who did you go with?
- ¿Qué hiciste? — What did you do?
- ¿Cómo fue? — How was it?
Set the time frame first
- Ayer fui al centro. — Yesterday I went downtown.
- El sábado fui al parque. — On Saturday I went to the park.
- El fin de semana pasado fui a Madrid. — Last weekend I went to Madrid.
A clear finished time expression tells the listener that the outing belongs to a completed past period.
Name the place and companion
- Fui al parque con Ana. — I went to the park with Ana.
- Fui al centro con Carlos. — I went downtown with Carlos.
- Fuimos a un restaurante. — We went to a restaurant.
Tell the main events in order
Use familiar sequence markers to keep the account easy to follow.
- Primero fuimos al museo. — First we went to the museum.
- Después comimos en un restaurante. — Afterward we ate in a restaurant.
- Luego caminamos por el centro. — Then we walked around downtown.
- Al final volvimos a casa. — Finally we returned home.
Use regular and irregular preterites you already know
- compré — I bought
- comimos — we ate
- hablamos — we spoke
- fui — I went
- hicimos — we did / made
- vimos — we saw
- trajeron — they brought
Model outing 1
El sábado fui al centro con Ana. Primero fuimos a un museo. Después comimos en un restaurante y hablamos mucho. Luego vimos unas tiendas. Al final volvimos a casa. Fue un día muy bueno. — On Saturday I went downtown with Ana. First we went to a museum. Afterward we ate in a restaurant and talked a lot. Then we saw some shops. Finally we returned home. It was a very good day.
Model outing 2
El fin de semana pasado fui al parque con Carlos. Caminamos una hora, comimos allí y después fuimos a un café. Carlos trajo su cámara y sacó muchas fotos. Al final fui a casa a las seis. — Last weekend I went to the park with Carlos. We walked for an hour, ate there, and afterward went to a café. Carlos brought his camera and took many photos. Finally I went home at six.
For this lesson, sacó muchas fotos — took many photos is a useful outing phrase.
Answer a detail that was not in your first account
A natural conversation includes follow-up questions. Do not memorize one speech and stop.
Person A: ¿A qué hora fuiste al museo? — What time did you go to the museum?
Person B: Fui a las diez. — I went at ten.
Person A: ¿Qué comiste? — What did you eat?
Person B: Comí arroz con pollo. — I ate rice with chicken.
Person A: ¿Cuánto costó? — How much did it cost?
Person B: Costó veinte euros. — It cost twenty euros.
For this task, costó — cost is a useful completed-event form.
Correct a misunderstanding
Person A: ¿Fuiste el domingo? — Did you go on Sunday?
Person B: No, fui el sábado. — No, I went on Saturday.
Person A: ¿Fuiste con Marta? — Did you go with Marta?
Person B: No, fui con Ana. — No, I went with Ana.
Give enough detail, but do not invent what you do not know
If the task only gives the place and main activities, do not add an exact price, time, or companion unless you know it.
Speaking Task A
Tell a partner about a recent outing. Include:
- one finished time expression
- one destination
- one companion if relevant
- three completed actions in understandable order
- one final evaluation or result
Speaking Task B: follow-up
Your partner should ask two questions that were not already answered in the first account.
- ¿A qué hora...? — At what time...?
- ¿Con quién...? — With whom...?
- ¿Qué...? — What...?
- ¿Dónde...? — Where...?
- ¿Cuánto...? — How much...?
Performance criteria
- The listener can identify when and where the outing happened.
- The main events appear in an understandable order.
- Past forms are clear enough to distinguish the completed actions.
- The account contains enough concrete detail without becoming a memorized text.
- You answer simple follow-up questions directly.
From a Recent Outing to Childhood Habits
You can now narrate a recent outing and answer simple follow-up questions about it. The next lesson shifts from one completed event to childhood habits and familiar places in the past.
