Speaking Task: Coordinate Conflicting Schedules in Spanish

This speaking task combines appointments, durations, repeated habits, and obligations. Your goal is to find one time that works for everyone, reject impossible options clearly, assign any needed roles, and confirm the final arrangement.

Read the three schedules

Ana:

  • Trabajo de lunes a viernes de nueve a cinco. — I work Monday through Friday from nine to five.
— On Tuesdays I have class from six to eight.

Carlos:

— On Mondays and Wednesdays I work until seven.
— On Saturday I have an appointment at five.

Marta:

  • Suelo trabajar los viernes por la tarde. — I usually work Friday afternoons.
  • El sábado puedo después de las seis. — On Saturday I am available after six.

Define the meeting requirement

La reunión dura una hora. — The meeting lasts one hour.

Everyone must be available for the complete hour.

Test an option

Option:

Martes a las seis. — Tuesday at six.

This does not work because Ana has class from six to eight.

— Ana cannot Tuesday at six because she has class.

Test another option

Option:

Miércoles a las seis. — Wednesday at six.

Carlos cannot because he works until seven.

— Carlos cannot at six because he works until seven.

Test Saturday

Marta can after six. Carlos has an appointment at five. If the appointment is finished before six, Saturday at seven may work, but do not assume the appointment's duration if it is not given.

Ask:

Carlos, ¿puedes el sábado a las siete? — Carlos, can you Saturday at seven?

If Carlos answers:

Sí, a las siete puedo. — Yes, I can at seven.

Then check the others directly.

Ask every participant to confirm

— Ana, can you Saturday at seven?

Person B: Sí. — Yes.

— Marta, can you Saturday at seven?

— Yes, I can after six.

Confirm the duration

Entonces, sábado de siete a ocho. — So, Saturday from seven to eight.

This confirms both the start time and the one-hour duration.

Assign roles clearly

If participants need to bring materials, state names rather than relying on unclear pronouns.

  • Ana trae los documentos. — Ana brings the documents.
  • Carlos reserva la sala. — Carlos books the room.
  • Marta envía el mensaje final. — Marta sends the final message.

For this lesson, reservar la sala — book the room is useful coordination vocabulary.

Repair a misunderstanding

Person A: Entonces, ¿domingo a las siete? — So, Sunday at seven?

Person B: No, sábado a las siete. — No, Saturday at seven.

Person A: ¿Sábado de siete a ocho? — Saturday from seven to eight?

Person B: Sí, correcto. — Yes, correct.

Do not force an option that conflicts with one participant

A shared meeting is not coordinated successfully if one person's stated obligation overlaps with the chosen time.

Speaking mission

Use the schedules above or another provided schedule set and complete these steps:

  1. state each participant's unavailable times
  2. state the required meeting duration
  3. propose at least two options
  4. reject any option that creates a conflict
  5. ask every participant to confirm the remaining option
  6. state the final day and complete time range
  7. assign any necessary role with a clear name
  8. repair one possible misunderstanding

Performance criteria

  1. The final time does not overlap with a stated obligation.
  2. The duration fits inside every participant's available period.
  3. Every participant explicitly confirms availability.
  4. Roles are assigned to clear people.
  5. The final day and time range are repeated.
  6. A misunderstanding is corrected directly rather than left unresolved.

From Schedule Coordination to Que and Donde

You can now coordinate conflicting schedules and confirm one workable final arrangement. The next lesson teaches you how to join descriptions with que and donde.
