Spanish Travel Mission: Recover from a Canceled Connection
Spanish Travel Mission: Recover from a Canceled Connection
This integrated travel mission asks you to recover from a familiar canceled connection. You will identify the affected journey, compare a limited set of alternatives, choose one, confirm the new plan, and tell another person what changed.
Mission situation
You are traveling from Madrid to Valencia with a connection. The second train has been canceled.
Su conexión a Valencia está cancelada. — Your connection to Valencia is canceled.
Your first task is to confirm which part of the trip is affected.
Confirm the affected service
Person A: ¿Está cancelado el tren a Valencia? — Is the train to Valencia canceled?
— Yes, the 17:30 train is canceled.
Ask for available alternatives
Person A: ¿Qué opciones hay para Valencia? — What options are there for Valencia?
The agent offers two options:
Opción A: tren directo a las diecinueve, sin coste adicional. — Option A: direct train at 19:00, with no additional cost.
— Option B: train at 18:15 with a change in Cuenca, ten euros more.
Compare time, route, and price
- La opción B sale antes. — Option B leaves earlier.
- La opción A es directa. — Option A is direct.
- La opción A no cuesta más. — Option A does not cost more.
- La opción B cuesta diez euros más. — Option B costs ten euros more.
Ask one clarification question if needed
- ¿A qué hora llega la opción A? — What time does option A arrive?
- ¿Cuánto dura el cambio en Cuenca? — How long is the connection in Cuenca?
- ¿Ha dicho dieciocho quince? — Did you say 18:15?
Choose an option
— I prefer option A, the direct 19:00 train.
Confirm the replacement plan
— So, you have a direct train to Valencia at 19:00.
Person A: ¿Directo a Valencia a las diecinueve? — Direct to Valencia at 19:00?
Person B: Sí, correcto. — Yes, correct.
Tell someone that your plan changed
Use a short message:
Mi conexión fue cancelada. Ahora voy a tomar un tren directo a las diecinueve. Llegaré más tarde. — My connection was canceled. Now I am going to take a direct train at 19:00. I will arrive later.
For this lesson, llegaré — I will arrive is a useful travel-update form. The future tense system is taught later.
Optional accommodation extension
If the provided scenario requires an extra night, keep the task limited to the offered information.
— I need one more night in the hotel.
Person B: Hay una habitación por 75 euros. — There is a room for 75 euros.
Person A: De acuerdo. Quiero una noche más. — All right. I want one more night.
This is an optional extension. You do not need to solve every possible consequence of the disruption.
Do not invent alternatives that were not offered
If the agent gives options A and B, compare A and B. This mission does not require open negotiation for routes, compensation, or services that are not in the scenario.
Mission performance sequence
- Identify the canceled service.
- Ask what limited alternatives are available.
- Compare their departure time, price, or route.
- Ask for repetition if one critical detail is unclear.
- Choose one offered option.
- Repeat the new route and time.
- Tell another person that your plan changed.
- If an extra night is explicitly needed, arrange only the limited accommodation information provided.

From a Canceled Connection to Time and Duration
You can now recover from a familiar canceled connection by selecting and confirming one available alternative. The next lesson teaches hace, desde, and desde hace so you can talk precisely about when something happened and how long something has continued.
