Speaking Task: Organize a Shared Meal and Divide Responsibilities in Spanish
This speaking task combines preferences, quantities, ownership, borrowed tools, and responsibility. Your goal is to organize a shared meal so that every person knows what to bring or prepare, for whom, and by what time.
Start by identifying preferences
Ask what people like, love, or do not want.
- ¿Qué te gusta comer? — What do you like to eat?
- ¿Te interesa preparar una ensalada? — Are you interested in preparing a salad?
- ¿Te molesta la comida picante? — Does spicy food bother you?
For this lesson, comida picante — spicy food is useful meal-planning vocabulary.
Confirm quantities
- Necesitamos medio kilo de arroz. — We need half a kilogram of rice.
- Necesitamos un litro de agua. — We need one liter of water.
- Necesitamos cuatro tomates. — We need four tomatoes.
Divide responsibilities with names first
- Ana prepara la ensalada. — Ana prepares the salad.
- Carlos trae el pan. — Carlos brings the bread.
- Marta compra las bebidas. — Marta buys the drinks.
- Yo preparo el arroz. — I prepare the rice.
Using names first makes the responsibility map clear before pronouns replace anything.
Say who brings what for whom
Person A: ¿Quién trae el pan para Ana y Carlos? — Who brings the bread for Ana and Carlos?
Person B: Marta se lo trae. — Marta brings it to them.
Se refers to Ana and Carlos as recipients. Lo refers to el pan — the bread.
Borrow a tool
Person A: Necesito un cuchillo grande. — I need a large knife.
Person B: Te presto el mío. — I will lend you mine.
Person A: Gracias. Te lo devuelvo después de comer. — Thank you. I will return it to you after eating.
Confirm ownership before borrowing
Person A: ¿Esta olla es tuya? — Is this pot yours?
Person B: No, es de Marta. — No, it belongs to Marta.
Do not borrow or return an item to the wrong person simply because someone else currently has it.
Add a time
- Trae el pan a las seis. — Bring the bread at six.
- Prepara la ensalada antes de las siete. — Prepare the salad before seven.
- Compra las bebidas esta tarde. — Buy the drinks this afternoon.
Organize the plan
Example:
Ana prepara la ensalada antes de las siete. Carlos trae el pan a las seis. Marta compra dos litros de agua y una botella de zumo. Yo preparo el arroz. — Ana prepares the salad before seven. Carlos brings the bread at six. Marta buys two liters of water and a bottle of juice. I prepare the rice.
For this lesson, una botella de zumo — a bottle of juice is useful meal vocabulary.
Check a preference before assigning food
Person A: A Carlos le molesta la comida picante. — Spicy food bothers Carlos.
Person B: Entonces, no preparo la salsa picante para él. — Then I will not prepare the spicy sauce for him.
For this lesson, salsa — sauce is useful meal vocabulary.
Repair a responsibility misunderstanding
Person A: ¿Marta trae el pan? — Is Marta bringing the bread?
Person B: No. Carlos trae el pan. Marta compra las bebidas. — No. Carlos brings the bread. Marta buys the drinks.
Repair a pronoun reference
Person A: ¿Se lo lleva Ana? — Is Ana taking it to him / her / them?
Person B: ¿El pan para Carlos? — The bread for Carlos?
Person A: Sí. — Yes.
Person B: Sí, Ana se lo lleva. — Yes, Ana takes it to him.
If se and lo have more than one possible reference, restore the nouns before continuing.
