Reading Spanish Receipts, Bills, and Simple Service Charges

Reading Spanish Receipts, Bills, and Simple Service Charges

In this reading lesson, you will extract items, quantities, unit prices, totals, service charges, the amount paid, any remaining amount, the date, and the reference number. If a line is unclear, identify it for clarification rather than assuming it is wrong.

Common receipt fields

  • — item
  • — quantity
  • — unit price
  • — subtotal
  • — charge
  • — total
  • — paid
  • — outstanding / pending
  • — date
  • — reference

Receipt 1

Read:

/

Check

/06. — Date: 12/06.

— Reference: A483.

— Two coffees, 2.50 euros each.

— One salad, 8 euros.

— Total: 13 euros.

— Paid: 13 euros.

Quantity and unit price are different

— two coffees is the quantity. — 2.50 euros each is the unit price.

Service charge

Read:

— Service: 4 euros.

This line identifies a service charge. The receipt alone does not tell you whether the charge is mistaken.

Bill 2

Read:

Check

— Room: 80 euros.

— Breakfast: 12 euros.

— Service charge: 5 euros.

— Total: 97 euros.

Amount paid and amount outstanding

Read:

— Total: 120 euros. Paid: 100 euros. Outstanding: 20 euros.

The three values answer different questions.

Ask about one unclear line

  • — I do not understand this charge.
  • — What does “service charge” mean?
  • — Can you explain this amount?

Identify a visible difference

If a receipt says:

— Advertised price: 20 euros. Charged price: 25 euros.

You can identify that the two written amounts differ.

Ask:

— Why do two different prices appear?

Do not assume the reason before someone explains it.

Reference number matters

If you need to ask about the bill later, keep the reference number exactly as printed.

— Reference: B77125.

A practical receipt-reading method

  1. Identify each item and quantity.
  2. Separate the unit price from the line total.
  3. Locate any service or additional charge.
  4. Read the total, amount paid, and outstanding amount separately.
  5. Record the date and reference number.
  6. If one line or amount is unclear, ask about that line specifically.
  7. Do not assume that every additional charge is an error.

From Receipts to Sending a Parcel

You can now extract the essential amounts and reference information from a simple bill or receipt. The next lesson teaches you how to describe a parcel and ask about delivery service, cost, time, and tracking.
