Spanish Fractions, Measurements, and Everyday Quantities

Spanish Fractions, Measurements, and Everyday Quantities

In this lesson, you will understand and state common everyday fractions, weights, volumes, lengths, and quantities. Keep every number connected to its unit, and do not assume that different units are equivalent.

Half: medio and media

When medio means half before a noun, it agrees with the noun.

  • — half a kilogram
  • — half a liter
  • — half an hour
  • — half a tablet

Quarter: un cuarto

  • — a quarter of a kilogram
  • — a quarter of a liter
  • — a quarter of an hour

Use de before the measured noun in these quarter expressions.

One and a half

  • — one and a half kilograms
  • — one and a half liters
  • — one and a half hours

Notice the agreement in because hora is feminine.

Common weight units

  • — one gram
  • — one hundred grams
  • — one kilogram
  • — half a kilogram

Common volume units

  • — one milliliter
  • — five milliliters
  • — one liter
  • — half a liter

Common length units

  • — one centimeter
  • — ten centimeters
  • — one meter
  • — two meters

Read the whole quantity

Do not separate the number from the unit.

  • — 250 grams
  • — 500 milliliters
  • — 2 meters

Whole number versus fraction

Compare:

  • — one kilogram
  • — half a kilogram
  • — one and a half kilograms
  • — a quarter of a kilogram

Measure food and drink

  • — I need half a kilogram of rice.
  • — I want one liter of water.
  • — I need a quarter kilogram of cheese.

Measure time

  • — I study for half an hour.
  • — I work for an hour and a half.
  • — I wait for a quarter of an hour.

Compare measurements only when the unit supports the comparison

You can compare two quantities expressed in the same unit.

  • — 500 grams is more than 250 grams.
  • — Two liters is more than one liter.

Do not assume equivalence across different units

Do not claim that a value in grams equals a value in milliliters unless the context gives the necessary conversion. Weight and volume are different measurement categories.

Reading a quantity

Producto A: — Product A: 500 milliliters.

Producto B: — Product B: 1 liter.

You can identify the units and quantities. Do not perform an unstated conversion if the task does not provide or require one.

A practical measurement method

  1. Read the whole number or fraction.
  2. Keep the unit attached to the quantity.
  3. Use medio or media according to the noun when it acts as an adjective.
  4. Use un cuarto de for a quarter of a measured quantity.
  5. Separate whole amounts from fractional amounts clearly.
  6. Compare values directly only when the units make the comparison valid.
  7. Do not invent a conversion between different measurement types.

From Quantities to Explaining Symptoms and Medication Needs

You can now understand and state common everyday quantities with their correct units. The next lesson combines health vocabulary with allergies, medication information, and precise symptom descriptions.
