Explaining What Must Happen Before a Plan Can Go Ahead in Spanish

In this lesson, you will explain the dependencies inside a plan: which preparation is already complete, which approval or information is still missing, what you are waiting for, and what action will begin as soon as the required step is completed.

Start with the final plan

Example:

— We want to start the apartment renovation on Monday.

The plan exists, but several earlier requirements may need to be completed first.

Identify a completed requirement

  • — We have already chosen the company.
  • — We already have the estimate.
  • — The technician has already visited the apartment.

These steps are complete and should not be described as still pending.

Identify a requirement that is still pending

  • — We are still waiting for the final confirmation.
  • — We still do not have the materials delivery date.
  • — The owner's approval is still missing.

For this lesson, faltar — to be missing / remain is useful planning vocabulary.

Explain what happens when the information arrives

  • — When we receive the confirmation, we will set the exact date.
  • — As soon as we know the delivery date, we will organize the work.

The confirmation and delivery information are still awaited, so the time clauses use the present subjunctive.

Explain what cannot happen yet

  • — We cannot start until the material arrives.
  • — We will not sign the agreement until we review the final price.

The event after marks the endpoint of waiting.

Put the dependency chain in order

Example:

  1. — First we need the owner's approval.
  2. — As soon as we receive it, we will confirm the order.
  3. — Afterward we will wait until the materials arrive.
  4. — When they arrive, we will start the renovation.

Completed step versus unmet requirement

Completed:

— We have already sent the documents.

Pending:

— We have not received the reply yet.

Do not describe both as if they have the same status.

Another planning example: course registration

Plan:

— I want to enroll in a course that starts in October.

Completed step:

— I have already sent the application.

Pending requirement:

— Now I have to wait for the reply.

Dependency:

— When I receive the reply, I will be able to pay the enrollment fee.

Final step:

— As soon as I pay the enrollment fee, I will confirm my place.

Another example: travel plan

— We already have the tickets, but we still do not have the hotel confirmation.

— I do not want to organize Saturday's activities until we know where we are going to stay.

— As soon as the confirmation arrives, we will finish the plan.

Do not add an advanced condition when a time dependency is enough

If the real meaning is “we are waiting for X, and then Y happens,” use the time clauses already learned.

— As soon as the reply arrives, we will start.

You do not need a more advanced hypothetical condition to express this dependency.

Make responsibility clear

Who must complete the missing step?

  • — The owner has to approve the estimate.
  • — The company has to confirm the delivery.
  • — We have to review the contract.

A practical dependency method

  1. State the final plan.
  2. List the steps that are already complete.
  3. Identify the approval, information, delivery, or preparation that is still missing.
  4. State who is responsible for the missing step.
  5. Use cuando or for the event that allows the next action to begin.
  6. Use for the event that ends a period of waiting or prevents an earlier action.
  7. Keep completed steps separate from unmet requirements.
  8. Use the time-clause system rather than introducing an unnecessary advanced conditional structure.

From Plan Dependencies to Antes de, Después de, and Antes de Que

You can now explain what is already complete, what is still missing, and what must happen before a plan can proceed. The next lesson is , and : Subjects and Time in Spanish.
