Expressing Wishes for Other People in Spanish

In this lesson, you will use a small set of familiar Spanish patterns to express a wish for another person. The important idea is that one person has the wish and another person is the subject of the desired situation.

Start with a familiar wish

• Espero que estés bien. — I hope you are well.
• Espero que tengas suerte. — I hope you have good luck.
• Espero que todo vaya bien. — I hope everything goes well.

In each sentence, espero — I hope expresses the speaker's wish. The subject of estés, tengas, or vaya is different from the person expressing the wish.

Identify the two roles

In:

Espero que tengas un buen viaje. — I hope you have a good trip.

The person who hopes is yo — I. The person who has the trip is tú — you.

In:

Esperamos que Ana encuentre trabajo pronto. — We hope Ana finds work soon.

The people who hope are nosotros — we. Ana is the person whose future situation is desired.

Wish versus information

Compare:

• Ana está bien. — Ana is well. This states information.
• Espero que Ana esté bien. — I hope Ana is well. This expresses the speaker's wish.

The second sentence does not simply report Ana's condition. It presents the speaker's hope about it.

Common wishes for familiar situations

• Espero que tengas un buen día. — I hope you have a good day.
• Espero que descanses. — I hope you get some rest.
• Espero que encuentres una buena opción. — I hope you find a good option.
• Espero que llegues bien. — I hope you arrive safely / without problems.
• Espero que te guste el curso. — I hope you like the course.
• Esperamos que disfrutes del viaje. — We hope you enjoy the trip.

Wish someone success

• Espero que te vaya bien en la entrevista. — I hope your interview goes well.
• Espero que apruebes el examen. — I hope you pass the exam.
• Espero que consigas el trabajo. — I hope you get the job.

For this lesson, apruebes — you pass and consigas — you get / obtain are useful wish forms. Their formation is explained systematically in later lessons.

Negative wishes can also be familiar

• Espero que no tengas problemas. — I hope you do not have problems.
• Espero que no llueva mañana. — I hope it does not rain tomorrow.

The negative belongs to the situation the speaker hopes will not happen.

A useful message pattern

Hola, Marta. Espero que estés bien. Espero que tengas un buen viaje y que todo vaya bien con la reserva. — Hello, Marta. I hope you are well. I hope you have a good trip and that everything goes well with the booking.

Do not derive the full verb system yet

Forms such as estés, tengas, vaya, descanses, and encuentres belong to a verb form called the present subjunctive. In this lesson, treat the sentences as useful wish patterns. The next lesson teaches how to form this verb system.

Do not define the form as “unreal”

Espero que Ana esté bien. — I hope Ana is well can refer to a completely real situation. The speaker simply presents it as something hoped for rather than as a direct assertion.

Short conversation

Person A: Mañana tengo una entrevista de trabajo. — Tomorrow I have a job interview.

Person B: Espero que te vaya muy bien. — I hope it goes very well for you.

Person A: Gracias. — Thank you.

Person B: Y espero que consigas el trabajo. — And I hope you get the job.

A practical wish method

1. Identify the person who has the wish.
2. Identify the person whose action or situation is desired.
3. Use a familiar frame such as espero que or esperamos que.
4. Keep the desired action or situation clear.
5. Distinguish a wish from a direct statement of fact.
6. Use the target wish forms as models without trying to derive the full subjunctive system yet.
