Writing a Short Spanish Opinion with Supporting Examples

Writing a Short Spanish Opinion with Supporting Examples

In this lesson, you will turn a clear opinion into a short connected text with relevant reasons, examples, and a conclusion. The main challenge is not producing many sentences; it is making every sentence support the same position.

Start with one clear position

Choose a familiar topic and state what you think.

  • — I think that living near work is a good idea.
  • — I think that public transport should be cheaper.
  • — For me, working from home is a convenient option.

For this lesson, — should is used as a practical opinion form. The systematic conditional is taught later.

Add a reason that actually supports the opinion

Position:

— I think that living near work is a good idea.

Supporting reason:

— Because less time is lost commuting.

Connected version:

— I think that living near work is a good idea because less time is lost commuting.

Add a second reason without repeating the first

First reason:

— Less time is lost commuting.

Different second reason:

— It is also easier to organize the day.

Avoid repeating the same meaning with slightly different words.

Use an example to make the reason concrete

Reason:

— Living near work saves time.

Example:

— For example, my sister takes ten minutes to get to her office.

The example illustrates the reason. It does not replace the opinion.

Keep the main idea separate from supporting detail

Main idea:

— For me, living in a neighborhood with good transport is convenient.

Supporting detail:

— There are three bus lines near my house.

The detail matters because it supports the evaluation of the neighborhood.

Use connectors with a clear function

  • — because: gives a reason
  • — for example: gives an illustration
  • — furthermore / in addition: adds a new supporting point
  • — however: introduces a limited contrast
  • — therefore / that is why: introduces a consequence
  • — in conclusion: closes the text

Do not repeat the same reason

Repetitive:

— I think that public transport is useful because it is practical. In addition, it is useful because it helps a lot.

More informative:

— I think that public transport is useful because it makes it possible to reach many places without a car. In addition, it can reduce transport expenses.

Include one limited counterpoint if useful

You can acknowledge one disadvantage without losing your position.

— However, living near downtown can be more expensive.

Then return to your position:

— Even so, for me it is worth it because I save a lot of time.

For this lesson, — it is worth it is a useful opinion phrase.

Build a complete short opinion

— I think that living near work is a good idea because less time is lost commuting. In addition, it is easier to organize the day. For example, my sister takes only ten minutes to get to her office and can return home for lunch. However, rents near downtown can be more expensive. Even so, for me the convenience and the time saved are important advantages. In conclusion, I would choose to live near work if the price were reasonable.

The final sentence contains a useful hypothetical phrase for this model. Systematic hypothetical conditions are taught later.

Review whether the reasons are sufficient

Ask:

  • — Does my reason explain my opinion?
  • — Does my example support that reason?
  • — Does the conclusion keep the same position?

Writing task

Write six to eight sentences about one familiar issue such as transport, housing, studying online, public spaces, or working from home. Include:

  1. one clear position
  2. two different supporting reasons
  3. one relevant example
  4. one limited contrast if useful
  5. one conclusion that matches the position

A practical opinion-writing method

  1. Write the position first.
  2. Add a reason that directly supports it.
  3. Add a second reason that contributes new information.
  4. Use one example to illustrate a reason.
  5. Use connectors according to their real function.
  6. Remove repeated ideas and unrelated details.
  7. Check that the conclusion does not contradict the opening position.

From Written Opinions to Recommending a Place to Live

You can now write a short opinion with reasons, examples, and a connected conclusion. The next lesson is a speaking task where you recommend a place to live by comparing real criteria and responding to a simple objection.
