Forming the Spanish Present Subjunctive: Regular Verbs and Common Irregulars

Forming the Spanish Present Subjunctive: Regular Verbs and Common Irregulars

In this lesson, you will form the present subjunctive. Start from the appropriate present-tense stem, then use a set of endings that differs from the normal present indicative. You will connect the forms to familiar wish sentences rather than defining the subjunctive as simply “doubt” or “unreality.”

Regular -AR verbs use e-type endings

For — to speak, use plus these endings:

SubjectForm
— that I speak
— that you speak
/ / — that he / she / you formal speak
/ — that we speak
/ — that you all speak
/ / — that they / you all speak

The regular -AR endings are -e, -es, -e, -emos, -éis, -en.

Regular -ER verbs use a-type endings

For — to eat:

SubjectForm
— that I eat
— that you eat
/ / — that he / she / you formal eat
/ — that we eat
/ — that you all eat
/ / — that they / you all eat

Regular -IR verbs use the same basic a-type endings

For — to live:

  • — that I / he / she live
  • — that you live
  • — that he / she / you formal live
  • — that we live
  • — that you all live
  • — that they / you all live

A useful formation shortcut

For many verbs, start from the present indicative form, remove the final -o, and add the subjunctive endings.

Example:

→ → — I speak → stem → subjunctive form.

Example:

→ → — I eat → stem → subjunctive form.

This shortcut becomes especially useful with many verbs whose form has a special stem.

Connect the form to wishes

  • — I hope you speak with Ana.
  • — I hope you eat well.
  • — I hope you live nearby.
  • — We hope they arrive soon.

Common irregular: ser

  • — that I / he / she be
  • — that you be
  • — that he / she / you formal be
  • — that we be
  • — that you all be
  • — that they / you all be

— I hope it is a good experience.

Common irregular: estar

  • — that I / he / she be
  • — that you be
  • — that he / she / you formal be
  • — that we be
  • — that you all be
  • — that they / you all be

— I hope you are well.

Common irregular: ir

  • — that I / he / she go
  • — that you go
  • — that he / she / you formal go
  • — that we go
  • — that you all go
  • — that they / you all go

— I hope things go well for you.

Common irregular: haber

  • — that I / he / she have; that there be
  • — that you have
  • — that he / she / you formal have
  • — that we have
  • — that you all have
  • — that they / you all have

— I hope there is a solution.

Common irregular: saber

  • — that I / he / she know
  • — that you know
  • — that he / she / you formal know
  • — that we know
  • — that you all know
  • — that they / you all know

— I hope you know the answer.

Common irregular: dar

  • — that I / he / she give
  • — that you give
  • — that he / she / you formal give
  • — that we give
  • — that you all give
  • — that they / you all give

— I hope it gives you enough time / I hope you have enough time.

Do not define the subjunctive as “not real”

— I hope Ana is at home may refer to a completely real present situation. The form is part of how the speaker frames the clause, not proof that the situation is false.

A practical formation method

  1. Find the appropriate present stem.
  2. For regular -AR verbs, use e-type subjunctive endings.
  3. For regular -ER and -IR verbs, use a-type subjunctive endings.
  4. Keep the written accents in forms such as , , , , and .
  5. Learn , , , , , and as high-frequency irregular patterns.
  6. Connect the form to familiar wish sentences rather than reducing the mood to one meaning such as doubt or unreality.

From Forming the Subjunctive to Choosing Infinitive or Subjunctive

You can now build basic present subjunctive forms. The next lesson teaches when a wish structure uses an infinitive and when it uses que plus a subjunctive clause.
