Paraphrasing a Missing Spanish Word and Keeping Your Message Moving

Paraphrasing a Missing Spanish Word and Keeping Your Message Moving

In this lesson, you will keep speaking when a specific Spanish word is missing. Describe what the object or idea does, what type of thing it is, what it looks like, where it is found, or give a familiar example. The goal is a short discriminating description, not a long translation into English.

Describe function

If you forget — umbrella:

— It is a thing you use when it rains so you do not get wet.

The function strongly identifies the object.

Describe category

If you forget — screwdriver:

— It is a tool you use to put in or remove screws.

Describe shape or appearance

If you forget — plug / socket depending on context:

— It is the part of the wall where you connect the charger.

This description identifies the intended object in a home context.

Give a familiar example

If you forget — citrus fruit:

— It is a type of fruit, like an orange or a lemon.

Use location

If you forget — counter:

— It is the place at reception where you speak with the employee.

Combine two clues when one is not enough

Weak:

— It is a small thing.

Better:

— It is a small thing you use to open a door.

This strongly suggests llave — key.

Ask whether the listener recognizes it

  • — Do you know what I mean?
  • — What is the thing called that you use to...?
  • — It is like..., but smaller.

Accept the word and continue

Speaker:

— I need a... a thing you use to charge the phone.

Listener:

— A charger?

Speaker:

— Yes, a charger. Mine does not work.

Once the word is supplied, return to the original message.

Do not switch into a long English explanation

If a short Spanish description is enough, use it. A long English detour interrupts the interaction and does not practice the communicative strategy.

Do not use a description that fits too many objects

Too vague:

— It is something that is in the kitchen.

Better:

— It is a kitchen appliance you use to heat food quickly.

This suggests microondas — microwave.

Use a known opposite or comparison

If you forget — narrow:

— It is the opposite of wide.

A practical paraphrasing method

  1. Keep speaking instead of stopping completely.
  2. Choose the fastest useful clue: function, category, shape, location, example, or opposite.
  3. Add a second clue only if needed.
  4. Ask whether the listener recognizes the word.
  5. Accept the supplied word and return to your original message.
  6. Avoid a long English translation or a description that could refer to many different things.

From Paraphrasing to Clarifying Meaning

You can now keep your message moving when one Spanish word is missing. The next lesson teaches you to identify the exact point of confusion, ask for clarification, and confirm shared understanding.
