Writing About Spanish Future Plans, Alternatives, and Possible Obstacles
Writing About Spanish Future Plans, Alternatives, and Possible Obstacles
In this lesson, you will write a connected future plan that distinguishes what you have decided, what is only an alternative, and what depends on an open condition. You will also explain possible obstacles and backup actions.
Start with one future goal
Example:
— Next year I want to take a professional course in another city.
This sentence states the goal.
State what you have decided
Decision:
— I am going to look for courses during this month, and I will compare prices before applying for a place.
Ir a presents a current intention. The simple future presents another later step.
Add a scheduled or fixed step with the present
— Registration opens on October 3.
The present is natural because the opening date is scheduled.
Add a practical alternative
Alternative:
— If the main course is full, I could choose a similar course at another school.
Podría shows that this is an option, not the current decision.
Add another alternative and its tradeoff
— I could also study online. It would be more flexible, but I would have less contact with other students.
Identify a possible obstacle
Obstacle:
— The main problem could be the price of accommodation.
Do not write as if the obstacle is certain when you only consider it possible.
Explain what you will do if the obstacle occurs
— If the rent is too expensive, I will look for a shared room.
The si clause uses the present. The future result states the later response.
Another obstacle and response
— It may be difficult to find work at first. If I do not find work during the first month, I will reduce my expenses and look for part-time options.
For this lesson, — part-time / half-day schedule is useful planning vocabulary.
Separate decision, suggestion, and condition
| Function | Example |
|---|---|
| decided intention | — I am going to look for courses this month. |
| later planned step | — I will compare prices. |
| alternative | — I could study online. |
| comparison / advice to self | — It would be better to save before moving. |
| open condition | — If the rent is expensive, I will look for a shared room. |
Do not present every alternative as a decision
Compare:
— I am going to study online.
— I could study online.
The first presents an intention. The second presents an option.
Do not present an obstacle as certain
Too strong if you do not know it:
— Accommodation will be a problem.
More accurate when it is only possible:
— Accommodation could be a problem.
Complete model plan
— Next year I want to take a professional course in another city. I am going to look for courses during this month and I will compare prices before applying for a place. Registration for the course that interests me most opens on October 3. If the course is full, I could choose a different school. I could also study online; it would be more flexible, but I would have less contact with other students. The main obstacle could be the price of accommodation. If the rent is too expensive, I will look for a shared room. Before moving, it would be better to save money for the first months.
Writing task
Write eight to ten sentences about one real or imagined future goal. Include:
- the goal
- two planned steps
- one scheduled date or arrangement if relevant
- one alternative
- one possible obstacle
- one open si condition and its result
- one statement that makes clear what is only a suggestion or possibility
Revision checklist
- Can the reader identify what you have actually decided?
- Are alternatives marked as possibilities rather than facts?
- Are obstacles presented with the right degree of certainty?
- Does every si clause use the present in this real open pattern?
- Does the result use the present, future, command, or conditional according to its function?
- Have you kept scheduled events distinct from personal intentions?
- Does the text remain connected around one future goal?
From Future Plans to Wishes for Other People
You can now write a future plan that separates decisions, alternatives, and possible obstacles. The next lesson is Expressing Wishes for Other People in Spanish, where you will learn limited familiar ways to express what you hope happens to someone else.
