Speaking Task: Discuss a Difficult Decision and Respond Empathetically in Spanish

In this speaking task, you will explore a difficult personal decision without taking it over. One speaker explains the options, doubts, values, and constraints. The listener responds to what was actually said, asks a clarification question, and offers advice or a possible action while respecting the speaker's final choice.

Scenario

Lucía has two job options.

— Option A: better salary, another city, more expensive rent, opportunity to learn more.

— Option B: lower salary, same city, close to her family, familiar work.

Speaker: explain the conflict

Lucía:

No sé qué hacer. — I do not know what to do. Option A interests me a lot because I would learn more and earn more money, but I would have to move. Option B is more comfortable because I can remain close to my family, but I am worried about losing a good professional opportunity.

Listener: respond to what you heard

Useful response:

— I understand that it is difficult because both options have important advantages for you.

This shows that the listener has identified the real conflict.

Ask a clarification question

— What is more important to you now: being close to your family or growing professionally?
— Do you know how much it would cost to live in the other city?
  • ¿Tendrías que mudarte inmediatamente? — Would you have to move immediately?

Do not assume the listener knows the answer

If Lucía says:

No sé cuánto costaría el alquiler. — I do not know how much the rent would cost.

A useful suggestion is:

Entonces, podrías investigar ese coste antes de decidir. — Then you could research that cost before deciding.

Offer an option, not a command

Less respectful:

Acepta la opción A. — Accept option A.

More appropriate:

— You could ask for a few days to compare the expenses and think about which priority is more important to you.

Express hope without deciding for the person

  • Espero que puedas decidir con calma. — I hope you can decide calmly.
— I hope you find an option that you feel good about.

The second sentence contains a later relative-clause pattern. Use it here as a practical support phrase.

Respond to doubt accurately

Lucía:

Dudo que pueda decidir hoy. — I doubt that I can decide today.

Listener:

No tienes que decidir ahora mismo. Quizás puedas pedir más tiempo. — You do not have to decide right now. Maybe you can ask for more time.

This responds to her stated doubt rather than ignoring it.

Respect the person's values

If Lucía says:

— For me, being close to my family is very important.

Do not dismiss that value simply because another option pays more.

Possible response:

— Then that criterion should carry a lot of weight in your decision.

Repair a misunderstanding

Listener:

— So, is option A in the same city?

— No, option A is in another city. Option B is here.

Listener:

Entiendo. Gracias por aclararlo. — I understand. Thank you for clarifying it.

Speaking mission

Discuss a difficult decision for three to five minutes. Include:

  1. two options
  2. at least two reasons for the speaker's hesitation
  3. one personal value or constraint
  4. one clarification question from the listener
  5. one empathetic response tied to what was heard
  6. one suggestion or possible action
  7. one expression of hope or reassurance
  8. a final statement that leaves the decision with the original speaker

Performance criteria

  1. The listener responds to the actual reasons the speaker gives.
  2. Clarification is used when a practical detail is missing.
  3. Advice is offered as advice or possibility, not as control.
  4. Hope and doubt are expressed with appropriate familiar structures.
  5. The listener does not promise that one option will definitely succeed.
  6. The person's values and constraints remain central to the discussion.
  7. The final choice remains with the person making the decision.

From Difficult Decisions to Future Time Clauses

You can now discuss a difficult decision empathetically without taking control of it. The next lesson teaches how cuando, hasta que, and en cuanto change according to whether the time event is habitual, completed, or still awaited in the future.
