Giving Advice and Weighing Options with Debería, Podría, and Sería Mejor
Giving Advice and Weighing Options with Debería, Podría, and Sería Mejor
In this lesson, you will recommend an option without turning your personal opinion into an order. Use debería for advice, podría for possibility, and sería mejor to compare actions. Add reasons, an open condition when useful, and one limitation for each option.
Debería for advice
- — You should speak with the teacher.
- — You should compare prices before booking.
- — I think you should rest a little more.
These are recommendations, not commands.
Podría for a possible option
- — You could study in the morning.
- — You could go by train instead of driving.
- — You could ask for more information before deciding.
Podría presents an available possibility. It does not say the listener must choose it.
Sería mejor for comparing actions
- — It would be better to book in advance.
- — It would be better to choose the cheaper option if the budget is limited.
- — For this trip, it would be better to leave early.
Add a reason
Advice:
— You should leave earlier because there is usually traffic at that time.
Possibility:
— You could work from home two days because you would save commuting time.
For this lesson, — you would save is a regular conditional form used to explain a possible advantage.
Add an open condition
- — If you have time, you could visit the museum.
- — If price is important, it would be better to compare the two options.
The si clause stays in the present because this is an open real condition.
State one advantage and one limitation
Option A:
— You could live outside downtown. The rent would be cheaper, but you would take longer to get to work.
Option B:
— You could live near work. You would save time, but you would probably pay more rent.
Choose according to the listener's priority
If the listener says:
— My priority is to save money.
Then:
— In that case, it would be better to look at the cheaper options first.
Advice is not a command
Command:
— Call the hotel now.
Advice:
— You should call the hotel before deciding.
The second leaves the decision with the listener.
Do not present personal preference as obligation
Personal view:
— I would choose the train because it seems more comfortable to me.
Better advice for another person:
— If arriving quickly is important to you, you could choose the train.
The second links the suggestion to the listener's stated priority.
Short advice conversation
Person A: — I want to study more, but at night I am very tired. Said by a male speaker.
Person B: — You could study for half an hour in the morning.
Person A: — In the morning I have little time.
Person B: — Then perhaps it would be better to study for less time but every day.
Quizá is used only as a familiar uncertainty marker here; do not generalize its mood behavior from this example.
A practical advice method
- Identify the listener's actual problem and priority.
- Use debería for a recommendation.
- Use podría for an available possibility.
- Use sería mejor when comparing actions.
- Add a reason that explains the recommendation.
- Add an open si condition when the advice depends on one circumstance.
- State an advantage and a simple limitation for important options.
- Keep personal preference separate from obligation.
From Advice to Writing Future Plans
You can now recommend an option, explain its benefit and limitation, and keep advice distinct from commands. The next lesson asks you to write a future plan with alternatives and possible obstacles.
