Clarifying a Point and Checking Understanding in Spanish
Clarifying a Point and Checking Understanding in Spanish
In this lesson, you will repair misunderstandings by identifying exactly what is unclear. You will distinguish asking someone to repeat the sound from asking what a word, reference, or idea means. You will then rephrase the point and confirm that both speakers now understand the same thing.
Ask for repetition when you did not hear clearly
- — Can you repeat it, please?
- — Could you say it again?
- — I did not hear the last part clearly.
This is an auditory problem: the sound was not clear enough.
Ask for meaning when you heard the words but do not understand them
- — What does “sign-up fee” mean?
- — What do you mean by “review the contract”?
- — Can you explain that part to me?
This is a semantic problem, not a hearing problem.
Clarify a reference
Unclear:
— We need it by Friday.
Clarification question:
— When you say “it,” do you mean the report or the estimate?
Clarify a time
Speaker:
— The meeting is in the afternoon.
Listener:
— At exactly what time?
Clarify a responsibility
Speaker:
— Afterward Marta calls him / her / you formal.
Listener:
— Does Marta call the customer or the technician?
Rephrase to check understanding
- — So, if I understand you correctly, we have to send the document before Thursday.
- — In other words, first we call the supplier and afterward confirm the date.
- — So, what you are saying is that the price does not include transport.
The last example uses as a practical preview. The next lesson teaches and + adjective systematically.
Correct a mistaken interpretation
Person A: — So the course starts Monday the 8th.
Person B: — Not exactly. Registration ends Monday the 8th; the course starts Wednesday the 10th.
The correction identifies the precise misunderstanding rather than repeating the whole conversation.
Confirm shared understanding
- — Correct?
- — Is that right?
- — Perfect, now I understand it.
- — Yes, that's it.
Do not ask for full repetition when one detail is unclear
Instead of:
— Can you repeat everything?
ask:
— Can you repeat just the date?
This makes the repair faster and more precise.
Short clarification sequence
Person A: — We need the confirmation before the technician arrives.
Person B: — Do you mean the customer's confirmation?
Person A: — Yes, exactly.
Person B: — So, first the customer confirms and afterward the technician comes. Correct?
Person A: — Yes, that's it.
A practical clarification method
- Decide whether the problem is hearing, meaning, reference, time, or responsibility.
- Ask only about the unclear point.
- Use repetition for an auditory problem and explanation for a meaning problem.
- Rephrase the point in your own words.
- Correct a mistaken interpretation specifically.
- Confirm shared understanding with a short final check.
From Clarification to Lo Que and Lo + Adjective
You can now identify the exact source of confusion, clarify it, and confirm a shared interpretation. The next lesson is and + Adjective: Referring to Ideas and Qualities in Spanish.
