Speaking Task: Explain a Custom and Compare Experiences in Spanish

In this speaking task, you will explain a custom from a specific context, describe its steps and meaning according to the people who practice it, compare it with another experience, and answer follow-up questions without making broad cultural judgments.

Custom A

In Marta's family:

En mi familia, la noche del 5 de enero cenamos juntos. Después, los niños dejan sus zapatos cerca de la puerta y ponen un poco de agua para los camellos. A la mañana siguiente buscan regalos. Para nosotros es una tradición familiar y a los niños les hace mucha ilusión. — In my family, on the night of January 5 we have dinner together. Afterward, the children leave their shoes near the door and put out a little water for the camels. The following morning they look for gifts. For us it is a family tradition, and the children get very excited about it.

Explain the context before the steps

Useful opening:

Voy a hablar de una costumbre de mi familia. — I am going to talk about a custom in my family.

This immediately limits the scope of the explanation.

Explain the sequence

  • Primero cenamos juntos. — First we have dinner together.
  • Después los niños preparan los zapatos. — Afterward the children prepare the shoes.
  • Antes de acostarse, ponen agua para los camellos. — Before going to bed, they put out water for the camels.
  • A la mañana siguiente buscan regalos. — The following morning they look for gifts.

Explain meaning as reported by participants

Para mi familia, lo más importante es pasar tiempo juntos. — For my family, the most important thing is spending time together.

This reports one family's value, not a universal meaning.

Experience B

Another speaker says:

En mi familia no hacemos eso. Nosotros nos reunimos el 24 de diciembre y abrimos los regalos después de cenar. — In my family we do not do that. We get together on December 24 and open the gifts after dinner.

Compare a similarity

En las dos familias, la celebración incluye una cena juntos y regalos. — In both families, the celebration includes a shared dinner and gifts.

Compare a difference

La diferencia es que en una familia los niños buscan los regalos por la mañana y en la otra los abren después de cenar. — The difference is that in one family the children look for gifts in the morning, and in the other they open them after dinner.

Avoid value judgments

Unhelpful:

Nuestra costumbre es mejor. — Our custom is better.

Better:

Son formas diferentes de celebrar con la familia. — They are different ways of celebrating with family.

Respond to a follow-up question

Listener:

¿Todas las familias de tu ciudad lo hacen así? — Do all families in your city do it that way?

Speaker:

No lo sé. Yo solo puedo explicar cómo lo hacemos en mi familia. — I do not know. I can only explain how we do it in my family.

This is a strong response because it keeps the claim within the evidence available to the speaker.

Another follow-up

Listener:

¿Qué significa para ti esa tradición? — What does that tradition mean to you?

Speaker:

Para mí, significa pasar tiempo con mi familia y recordar mi infancia. — For me, it means spending time with my family and remembering my childhood.

Compare experiences, not whole cultures

Useful:

En mi experiencia, las dos celebraciones tienen un ambiente familiar, pero el momento de los regalos es diferente. — In my experience, both celebrations have a family atmosphere, but the timing of the gifts is different.

Speaking mission

Explain one custom and compare it with another account. Include:

  1. the specific family, region, group, or context
  2. the sequence of the custom
  3. what the custom means according to the people described
  4. one similarity with another experience
  5. one difference
  6. one answer to an unplanned follow-up question
  7. one statement that limits your generalization appropriately

Performance criteria

  1. The listener can follow the custom in order.
  2. The speaker identifies the scope of the account clearly.
  3. Meanings are attributed to the people who express them.
  4. Similarities and differences are based on specific information.
  5. Follow-up questions receive direct answers.
  6. The speaker avoids turning one experience into a rule about an entire country or language community.

From Cultural Accounts to News Vocabulary

You can now explain a custom and compare experiences without overgeneralizing. The next lesson introduces the basic vocabulary needed to identify events, participants, sources, and statements in clear Spanish news.
