Writing a Spanish Review with Description, Evaluation, and a Recommendation

Writing a Spanish Review with Description, Evaluation, and a Recommendation

In this lesson, you will write a coherent review of a book, film, course, restaurant, service, or other familiar experience. A useful review tells the reader what the thing is, selects relevant descriptive details, evaluates strengths and weaknesses with reasons, and gives a recommendation for a particular audience.

Start by identifying what you are reviewing

  • — The film is called El viaje corto.
  • — It is a comedy about three friends who take an unexpected trip.
  • — The course lasts eight weeks and focuses on practical conversation.

Keep description and evaluation separate

Neutral description:

— The film lasts one hour and forty minutes.

Evaluation:

— The pace is lively and keeps your interest.

The first sentence gives information. The second gives a judgment.

Explain why something is a strength

Weak:

— The characters are good.

Stronger:

— The characters feel believable because they have everyday problems and react in different ways.

Explain a weakness precisely

Weak:

— The ending is bad.

Stronger:

— The ending seemed too fast to me because two important problems are resolved in a few minutes.

Use selective description

A review is not a complete summary. Include only enough plot, service, or product description to help the reader understand your evaluation.

Useful:

— The story follows three friends who miss their train and have to find another way to get to a wedding.

You do not need to describe every scene.

State your evaluation clearly

  • — The best thing is the dialogue between the characters.
  • — The most useful part of the course is the speaking practice.
  • — The worst part was the waiting time.

Balance advantages and disadvantages

— The platform is easy to use and the explanations are clear. However, some activities are repetitive.

Recommend it to a specific audience

General:

— I recommend it.

More useful:

— I recommend it to people who want a light comedy and do not need a very complex story.

Explain when you would not recommend it

— If you are looking for a fast action film, it is probably not the best option.

This helps the reader decide whether the work fits their preferences.

Complete model review

— El viaje corto is a comedy about three friends who miss their train and have to find another way to get to a wedding. The film lasts one hour and forty minutes and focuses more on the characters than on the action. The best thing is the dialogue because the three friends have different personalities and their conversations feel natural. I also liked that the problems were everyday ones and easy to understand. However, the ending seemed too fast to me because several difficulties are resolved in a few minutes. Overall, it is an entertaining and simple film. I recommend it to people looking for a light comedy to have a good time.

Review checklist

  1. Have you identified the work, service, or product clearly?
  2. Have you included only description that helps the reader understand your evaluation?
  3. Can the reader distinguish factual description from your judgment?
  4. Have you explained why the main strengths and weaknesses matter?
  5. Does the recommendation name the type of audience who may benefit?
  6. Have you avoided turning the review into a plot summary or a list of adjectives?

From Reviews to Short Presentations

You can now write a review that combines description, evaluation, and a useful recommendation. The next lesson teaches you to organize the same kind of information in a short spoken presentation with clear signposting.
