Speaking Task: Tell an Anecdote and Answer Unplanned Questions in Spanish
Speaking Task: Tell an Anecdote and Answer Unplanned Questions in Spanish
This speaking task asks you to tell a short anecdote from reminder points rather than a memorized script. You will establish the background, explain the turning point and outcome, answer unexpected follow-up questions, and then return to the story without losing the time frame.
Use reminder points, not full sentences
Imagine these notes:
- sábado pasado — last Saturday
- estación — station
- llovía — it was raining
- billete equivocado — wrong ticket
- empleada ayudó — employee helped
- otro tren — another train
- llegué tarde pero bien — I arrived late but safely / successfully
Your task is to turn the notes into a connected anecdote in your own words.
Model opening
— Last Saturday I had to travel to Valencia. When I arrived at the station, it was raining heavily and there were quite a lot of people.
The imperfect creates the background. The preterite introduces the completed arrival.
Introduce the turning point
— When I went to get on the train, I realized that I had bought a ticket for a different time.
The past perfect shows that the ticket purchase happened before the moment of realization.
Continue with the response
— Then I spoke with an employee. She explained the options to me and I was able to change the ticket.
State the outcome
— In the end I took another train and arrived one hour later than planned, but everything turned out well.
Unexpected Question 1: time
Listener:
¿A qué hora llegaste a la estación? — What time did you arrive at the station?
Possible answer:
Llegué sobre las ocho y media. — I arrived at about eight thirty.
Then return to the story:
Como decía, cuando fui a entrar en el tren, vi que el horario no coincidía. — As I was saying, when I went to get on the train, I saw that the time did not match.
For this lesson, Como decía... — As I was saying... is a useful phrase for returning to your narrative.
Unexpected Question 2: earlier action
Listener:
— Had you checked the ticket carefully before leaving home?
Possible answer:
No. Lo había mirado rápidamente y no vi el error. — No. I had looked at it quickly and did not see the mistake.
Return:
— After realizing the problem, I went to the information desk.
Unexpected Question 3: motive
Listener:
¿Por qué no compraste otro billete directamente? — Why didn't you buy another ticket directly?
Possible answer:
— First I wanted to know whether I could change the ticket I already had.
Rephrase when you cannot find the exact word
If you forget taquilla — ticket office, you can say:
Fui al lugar donde ayudan a los pasajeros. — I went to the place where they help passengers.
Maintaining the story is more important than stopping because one word is missing.
Keep the time frame stable after a question
If the anecdote is about last Saturday, do not accidentally switch to present tense after answering a question.
Stable return:
— Afterward I spoke with the employee and changed the ticket.
Do not restart the whole story
After a follow-up question, answer only the missing detail and continue from the point where the listener interrupted you.

Speaking mission
Tell a six-to-eight-sentence anecdote from reminder points. During the telling, answer two or three unexpected questions and continue the anecdote afterward.
Performance criteria
- Establish enough background for the listener to understand the situation.
- Make the turning point easy to identify.
- Keep the main event sequence coherent.
- Use preterite, imperfect, and past perfect according to the narrative roles already learned.
- Answer an unplanned question directly without abandoning the anecdote.
- Return to the story with a phrase such as Como decía... when useful.
- Rephrase when a word is missing rather than losing the story.
- Finish with a clear outcome.
From Anecdotes to the Simple Future
You can now tell an anecdote and continue it after spontaneous follow-up questions. The next lesson teaches the regular and irregular forms of the Spanish simple future for events that will happen later.
